Addams Family, The

"It's all together...I don't know...ooky."
4 stars

Creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky.

The big screen treatment of the popular television series (and cartoon drawn by Charles Addams) actually works. Played as a dark comedy by director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men In Black). I like this movie quite a bit, simply because each actor seems so perfectly cast in his or her role. Raul Julia IS Gomez, Anjelica Huston IS Morticia, and so on. There's some really funny, quirky moments in this film, like Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) at a school pageant where they end up severing each other's limbs, to the shock and dismay of the audience. They, of course, get a standing ovation from their parents.

The plot at the heart of the Addams Family is weak. Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) has been missing in the Bermuda Triangle for some time. A crooked accountant notices someone who looks a bit like Fester and tries to pass him off as the real deal in order to get to the Addams family fortune. What a shock that it turns out that the lookalike really is Fester, only with amnesia. Amnesia as plot device rarely works, but you tend to overlook it here.

Visually, this movie's right cool. You definitely get the feel of Addams' New Yorker cartoons as well as the television show, and the resemblance of the actors to their characters is often times uncanny.

It's smart and funny and certainly worthy your time.
