Blast from the Past (* ½) - Blast from my ass is more like it. There aren’t very many original ideas floating around in Hollywood these days, but when a project with even a mere hint of freshness comes along, the filmmakers always seem to float it right in the toilet. The biggest problem with this film is its PG-13 rating. The script comes off as too innocuous, feeling afraid to take the chances that might have made this a better movie. What would have happened if Brendan Fraser went home with the two blonds at the dance club? Why not make some references to the reemergence of swing clubs that things haven’t changed that much The best woman this guy can find is Alicia Silverstone? Maybe this is part of the character trait of how naïve he truly is, but it certainly makes the argument for couples to see other people to check out the other players in the field. In the film’s defense I did see a midnight show and found myself dosing off in several spots. I wasn’t that tired and a better film could have held my attention better, so perhaps I shouldn’t say too much, since I probably missed about 15 minutes of it. I did enjoy Dave Foley as the gay friend - he’s got some good lines. And I also enjoyed Brendan Fraser, who’s got the perfect tone and mannerisms for the film and almost gets the film going just when ole Alicia enters the picture, who starts out seeming smart, but then ventures into someone who’s dumber and more clueless than her Cher character in that film ever could be.It’s a real shame, because it’s a film with promise. Maybe I missed something valuable in those 15 minutes I dosed off. Then again, maybe my dream was better during that time. I can’t remember what, if anything, I dreamed at that point - but I know Alicia Silverstone wasn’t in it.
