I've Heard the Mermaids Singing
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Rob Gonsalves

"Charming fluff."
4 stars

This low-budget charmer was the feature debut of Patricia Rozema, who went on to direct 'When Night Is Falling' and 'Mansfield Park.'

The pixie-ish Sheila McCarthy stars as Polly, a 31-year-old Toronto temp worker who finds secretarial work at an art gallery run by the remote, somewhat pompous Gabrielle (Paule Baillageon). Polly, who takes photos as a hobby and lives with a cat, is fascinated by the artsy world of Gabrielle, who wields the full arsenal of critical phrases like “oblique pragmatism.”

Disillusionment is in store for Polly, though, not long after she meets Gabrielle’s lover Mary (Ann-Marie McDonald). The movie has been claimed as an example of ‘80s art-house lesbian chic, though it just features lesbians; its real theme is the importance of art vs. the importance of life lived as improv.

A short, sweet, enjoyable comedy, with a winning performance by McCarthy. Slight demerit: overuse of Delibes’ “Lakme.”
