DVD Eye From The Recap Guy

They bleed DVDs, not acid!
by Ryan Arthur

Welcome to the inaugural edition of DVD Eye From The Recap Guy. I'll gladly take a better title, so get crackin', creative types. In this column, you'll find a plethora of new DVD title announcements, lists of extras and features, and the option to preorder your copy of these new releases. We'll hit theatrical films making their DVD premieres, reissues and new releases, TV-movies and box sets, and music-related stuff, too. So jump right in.

This is meant to be an occasional feature - probably a bi-weekly or monthly deal - and a complement (compliment?) to two great features that are already a part of HBS/eFC: Randy Muselman's New On Home Video column (the most recent edition can be found here) and the Upcoming DVD Release Schedule, which Erik Childress maintains. The purpose here is to give you the heads up on some titles; not just the big blockbuster stuff, but smaller films you may have missed or catalog titles that are hitting the market for the first time.

All of the information contained here has been gleaned from a number of sources:

The Digital Bits
DVD File
DVDAnswers
DVD Journal
DVD Fanatic

I'll continue to scour the 'net looking for this info, at least until studios start sending me release info (hint, hint).

The featured photo for this particular article is pretty badass, and is courtesy of The Digital Bits: Fox released The Alien Quadrilogy in Japan in a replica of a warrior Alien's head. The price? 29,800 yen, or around $300 American. It wouldn't fit wherever you're storing your DVDs, but it'd still look pretty cool, no?

A couple notes before the rundown:

1) All of the release dates are for the United States. Sorry, international readers. In some cases (Buffy, Robocop and Futurama spring to mind) you've gotten these long before we did. If they haven't already been released in your region, add two months to the US release date for a starting point as a guess, or contact your local retailer. 2) All preorder links are to Amazon.com, so they'll be using those prices and will be for Region 1 releases. Unless you've got a region-free player, they won't be of much use. When there is no Amazon.com link, I've included the manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (SRP), which will always be on the high end. 4) As for listing features and extras: all audio is in English unless otherwise noted, and 99% of the releases have at least one subtitle track, which I haven't listed.

Finally, two important newsbits regarding releases that haven't happened.

Ed Wood Special Edition
This was to have been released February 3, but has been delayed indefinitely. Some retailers had it, and advertised it, but it was recalled by Disney. No official reason was given, though it could be the desire to cash in on Oscar Nominees Johnny Depp and Bill Murray after the Oscar ceremony. There's also been rumors of rights issues regarding some music either in the feature itself or the extras. We'll see.

Ingmar Bergman Collection
MGM Home Entertainment issued an official statement regarding the problems with the Ingmar Bergman Collection, which was originally scheduled for release on February 10th. Two of the films were heavily cropped from the original 1.37:1 aspect ratios. The full statement from MGM:

"It has come to our attention that the transfers utilized for the release of Ingmar Bergman's Hour of the Wolf Special Edition DVD and Shame Special Edition DVD are not representative of the intended theatrical presentation. In order to provide customers with the best quality product available, we are recalling the product at retail and will be releasing both films in a 1:37:1 aspect ratio on April 20, 2004. The Ingmar Bergman DVD Collection will also be available on that date. MGM Home Entertainment always strives to provide the highest standard of product and customer care. For additional information or comments, please contact our customer service at 877/646-4968." So there you go. You can go ahead and preorder now.

All right, let's get started. We'll look at TV releases, music titles, then movies, with our first releases starting March 9.
