Considered by many to be the greatest of cinema's silent clowns, Buster Keaton was a consummate practitioner of physical comedy. Although labeled the "Great Stone Face," Keaton found tremendous eloquence in his deadpan style with his alert and expressive eyes, lithe acrobat's body, and a consummate air of grace. This release from the TCM Archives puts the spotlight on his MGM period. THE CAMERAMAN, remastered with a new score by Arthur Barnow, and SPITE MARRIAGE are among Keaton's funniest silents, while FREE AND EASY is his first talkie. Also included is film historian Kevin Brownlow's poignant documentary, "So Funny It Hurts: Buster Keaton at MGM," completing a collection which offers keen insight into what makes Keaton's unique style of comedy hilarious, moving and timeless.

In Lang's chilling masterpiece about a serial child killer who terrorizes a German town, Lorre gives an unforgettable performance as the modern psychopath, Franz Becker, who attempts to attain the dignity of a tragic hero, despite his uncontrollable urge to kill. Often credited for starting both the serial killer and the police procedural film genres, M is also notable for its startling statement about the murderous nature which resides within human beings.

NEW Special Editions

Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights (Special Edition) (Columbia/Tri-Star)
Adam Sandler and director Seth Kearsley present an animated Hanukkah tale with ADAM SANDLER'S EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS. Davey Stone (Sandler) is lurching down a wayward path. He's a drunk and aging delinquent, infamous in Dukesberry for spreading misery as deftly as he belches full sentences. He's facing prison when Whitey Duvall (Sandler again), a lovable, physically challenged man, proposes that Stone work with him at the community center as a referee for the local basketball league. The surly Stone accepts the job, and moves in with Whitey and his twin sister, Eleanore (also voiced by Sandler). But the true test is whether Stone can rise above his self-destructive habits in order to reunite with his former girlfriend, Jennifer (Jackie Titone), and act as a role model for her young son, Benjamin (Austin Stout). The snow-covered landscapes in EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS have a pleasing, three-dimensional realism that's as cheerful as a Hallmark holiday card. Sandler, with his wide range of inane, high-pitched voices, is as funny as ever, punctuating the innocent world of EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS with the refreshingly irreverent brand of humor he displayed in HAPPY GILMORE, THE WEDDING SINGER, and BIG DADDY. Though the film isn't really for kids, Sandler and Kearsley manage to make even the more daring animated characters--like one with three breasts--seem harmless. EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS also features the voices of Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider, and Tyra Banks.

Breaker Morant (Masterworks Edition) (Wellspring)
One of a crop of impressive films to arrive from Australia in the late 1970s and early 1980s, BREAKER MORANT marked Bruce Beresford as a director to watch. Based on a play by Kenneth G. Ross, the film is a tersely dramatic account of the true story of the court-martial of three soldiers attached to the Bushveld Carbineers, a guerrilla warfare unit of the British army that operated during the Boer War (1899-1902). Edward Woodward stars as Lt. Harry "Breaker" Morant, the primus inter pares of this trio that includes Lt. Peter Handcock (Bryan Brown) and Lt. George Witton (Lewis Fitzgerald). Attorney Major J.F. Thomas (Jack Thompson) is given only one day to mount a defense of the officers, who have been charged with the death of Boer prisoners and a German minister. Weaving flashbacks into the trial proceedings, Beresford tells the story of the controversial killing, an act of revenge against the Boers for having killed and mutilated a close friend of Morant's. While the young Witton fears for his life, Morant and Handcock display only a caustically witty stoicism as they await the trial's outcome. Superbly executed in every area, the film is a memorable evocation of the hypocrisy of empire.

In 1730, the Manchu dynasty hires the blind Master of the Flying Guillotine (Kam Kong) to quell any resistance from the Han people, whose dynasty has just been taken over. When a fighting tournament is announced, the Master sees it as a chance to avenge his two disciples, who were killed by the One Armed Boxer--another Master who will fight in the tournament. The blind man's unlikely weapon of revenge is the "Flying Guillotine" which he hurls through the air to decapitate his victims--but the One Armed Boxer has a few tricks up his sleeve. This 1975 production is a favorite among many hardcore fans of martial arts film.

Meet the Parents (Special Edition) (Universal)
MEET THE PARENTS stars Ben Stiller as the unfortunately named Greg Focker, a neurotic nurse intent on marrying his girlfriend, Pam (Teri Polo). But when the couple visits Pam's family home for her sister's wedding, he must first win the approval of her father, Jack (Robert De Niro), a protective ex-CIA agent. Before long, the awkward Greg and the suspicious Jack go head-to-head, resulting in hilarious scenes that feature a lie detector test, a suburban car chase, a toilet-trained cat, and a mean game of water volleyball. As the misunderstandings and mistakes reach an almost nightmarish peak, it seems as though Greg may never win over Pam's unflinching guardian. Featuring the inspired pairing of Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller (and an excellent appearance by Owen Wilson), director Jay Roach's clever comedy exemplifies every man's worst fears about courtship. When things for Stiller's character get bad, they just continue to get worse, culminating in a ridiculously funny airport scene. In the tradition of ANNIE HALL and FLIRTING WITH DISASTER, MEET THE PARENTS is an intelligent yet slapstick comedy about the eccentricities of the American family.
DVD Features108 mins, PG-13, Anamorphic Widescreen (1:85), Dolby Digital 5.1 (English/French/Spanish) & DTS 5.1 (English), 35 Never-Before-Seen Outtakes, Deleted Scenes (including DeNiro singing during the wedding), Silly Cat Tricks, The Truth About Lying

Top Gun (Collector's Edition) (Paramount)
Maverick (Tom Cruise) is a reckless F-14 pilot who flies by instinct and breaks all of the rules. While attending the Navy's elite air combat training academy, affectionately known as "Top Gun," Maverick romances the civilian astrophysics instructor (Kelly McGillis) and competes with crackerjack pilot Ice (Val Kilmer) for top honors. He is the quintessential rebel, upsetting senior officers with his antics and risk-taking while simultaneously amazing them with his skill. In the end, Maverick overcomes a tragic loss and his need to stand out in the crowd and proves that he can shine as part of a team. Anthony Edwards stars as Maverick’s best friend and co-pilot, Goose, and Meg Ryan first garnered attention as Goose’s wife, Carole. Superb state-of-the-art aerial photography makes TOP GUN, directed by Tony Scott, one of the most exciting and entertaining films of its genre. This top grossing movie of 1986 is allegedly based on a Navy fighter pilot program at the Miramar Naval Base in San Diego, California, and was filmed on location at the base.
DVD Features2 Discs, 109 mins, PG, Anamorphic Widescreen, Dolby Digital 6.1 DTS & 5.1 (English) and Dolby Surround (English/French), Commentary by Jerry Bruckheimer, Tony Scott & Naval Experts, 4 Music Videos (Kenny Loggins “Danger Zone”, Berlin “Take My Breath Away”, Loverboy “Heaven In Your Eyes”, Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens “Top Gun Anthem”), TV Spots, Danger Zone: The Making of Top Gun (6-Part Documentary), Multi-Angle Storyboards with Optional Commentary by Director Tony Scott, Behind-the-Scenes FEaturette, Survival Training Featurette, Tom Cruise Interviews, Production Photography

Wild At Heart (Special Edition) (MGM)
In adapting Barry Gifford’s colorful novel, David Lynch delivers another jolt of adrenaline to unsuspecting viewers everywhere. WILD AT HEART follows the troubled romance of Sailor (Nicolas Cage) and Lula (Laura Dern), two lovers who struggle to remain together even when fate seems intent on keeping them apart. In this case, fate is Lula’s mother, Marietta Fortune (Diane Ladd), a desperate woman who hates Sailor and will do anything to keep him away from her daughter. After Sailor is released from prison for murdering a man--albeit in self-defense--he and Lula embark on a sex-filled, rocking road trip, aware that they are being hunted by one of Marietta’s cronies. When they pull off the road in order to hide out in a small trailer park, Sailor befriends Bobby Peru (Willem Dafoe), an incredibly intense war veteran with a rotten set of teeth. Bobby convinces Sailor to help him rob a bank, much to Lula’s objections (for she has discovered that she is pregnant). Sailor must decide if he wants to go straight and be there for his child or remain under Bobby’s influence and risk returning to jail. Lynch’s raucous film contains his trademark visual style, over-the-top dialogue, and pulsating soundtrack, creating another truly distinct picture.
DVD Features124 mins, R, Anamorphic Widescreen (2:35), Dolby Digital 5.1 & Original Stereo Surround (English), Featurette (Love, Death, Elvis & Oz: The Making of Wild at Heart), Dell’s Lunch Counter Extended Interviews, Sailor & Lula Image Gallery, Specific Spontaneity; Focus on David Lynch Featurette, David Lynch on the DVD Process, Original Making-of Featurette, 4 TV Spots, Original Theatrical Trailer, Subtitles (English/French/Spanish)

Action/Adventure/War/Westerns

Blind Fury (Columbia/Tri-Star)
BLIND FURY is based on the series of Japanese movies made during the 1960s that featured Zatoichi, a wandering blind swordfighter. Updated and Americanized by scriptwriter Charles Robert Carner and director Phillip Noyce, Zatoichi is now Nick Parker (Rutger Hauer), a soldier blinded in action in the Vietnam War and nursed back to health by Vietnamese villagers. Nick develops an acute sense of hearing and, in spite of his disability, becomes a master swordsman--all during the opening credits. BLIND FURY retains the mixture of humor, violence, and sentiment that characterized the original films. Left in charge of young Billy Devereaux (Brandon Call) after the death of his mother, Nick takes Billy across the United States by bus. However, the pair is menaced by overwhelming numbers of vicious thugs led by Slag (Randall "Tex" Cobb, who plays the bounty hunter in the Coen brothers’ RAISING ARIZONA) on the journey. Nick, of course, handles these predicaments with casual skill, luck, good humor, and his trusty hidden samurai sword.

George Stevens' classic action-comedy stars Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Victor McLaglen as a trio of carousing British army officers in 1890s colonial India. When the telegraph wires to one of the British outposts are found to have been cut, the three friends, Sergeants Cutter (Grant), Ballantine (Fairbanks), and McChesney ( McLaglen), are sent to investigate. They encounter the Thugges, a cult of religious extremists intent on driving the British from their land, but are able to repel their attack. After the soldiers return to their posts, Ballantine decides to leave the service and marry his girlfriend, Emmy Stebbins (Joan Fontaine). His friends are horrified by this news, and try to concoct a ruse to keep him in the army. While waiting, the mercenary Cutter, led by Gunga Din--their loyal, native water-bearer, goes into the hills in search of gold. They find that the temple of gold is, in fact, the headquarters of the Thugges, who capture Cutter, but allow Din to escape. Stevens makes good use of his slapstick training here, putting a comic twist on the potential cliches of nearly every scene. In doing so, he creates of one of the most sheerly entertaining films every made. The three principals are perfectly cast, and the film boosted Grant to a new level of stardom. However, the unfortunate, "white man's burden" treatment accorded to Gunga Din must be seen in the context of the film's more benighted time.

This eagerly awaited sequel to 2003's wildly popular BLUE COLLAR COMEDY TOUR THE MOVIE takes even deeper, funnier stabs at America's working class. In-demand comedians Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvail, and Ron White bring out the best blue-collar humor, with new material designed by and for America's everyman. Each comedian flexes his own unique comic muscles, providing a range of performing styles that should appeal to varied audiences. While Foxworthy's likeability makes him appealing to self-proclaimed "average" guys everywhere, Ron White's style has a darker edge. And, not to worry; those in search of low brow laughs will not be disappointed. With Larry the Cable Guy's new routine, there's plenty of redneck humor to go around. Featuring tour bus footage of the guys just hanging out, and a musical performance of the original "Blue Collar Boys Ride Again," this release illustrates what sets these working class guys apart from the rest.

The fractious relationship between director Paul Morrissey (known for his work on Andy Warhol's FLESH, TRASH and HEAT) and his two stars--Brit comedians Peter Cook (from the 1967 version of BEDAZZLED) and Dudley Moore (ARTHUR)--threatened to usurp this satirical poke at the SHERLOCK HOLMES books. But fortunately the end results more than justify the somewhat shaky atmosphere on set, with the laughs coming thick and fast throughout. Cook plays Holmes, who sends his faithful partner Watson (Moore) to take on a case involving a demonic dog. The fruitless search for the errant canine leads to some merriment at Watson's expense, while Holmes is busy visiting his mother, and interviewing candidates to run errands for him (he settles on a one-legged man). Pairing elements of PYTHON-esque humor with the gross-out tendencies of director Morrissey, this is a fascinating clash of comedic styles that produces some rib-tickling scenes, and is lovingly infused with the dark humor of co-writers Cook and Moore.

Director William Wyler went to Paris to shoot this frothy caper comedy. Nicole Bonnet (Audrey Hepburn) lives with her father, Charles (Hugh Griffith). He keeps them in luxury by selling an occasional painting--maybe a Renoir, maybe a van Gogh. A well-known art connoisseur, he has an endless supply of paintings; he paints them himself--like his father before him, he is an expert forger. Persuaded to loan a Cellini sculpture--actually created by his father--for an exhibition, Charles is horrified when the museum decides to insure the sculpture and sends for an expert to authenticate it. Afraid the Bonnets will be exposed, Nicole decides to help. After thwarting an apparent robbery, she becomes attracted to the intruder, Simon Dermott (Peter O’Toole). She contacts Simon again, with a proposition: She wants him to help her steal the Cellini--before it is inspected. Never for a moment taking itself seriously, this amusing concoction rests in the capable hands of its handsome and witty stars. They both deliver: Audrey is fetching and Peter is dashing. The robbery--an amusing take on the elaborate jewelry heists seen in Jules Dassin’s RIFIFI and TOPKAPI--is as intricate and amusing as it is unlikely.

I Remember Mama (Warner Bros.)
Irene Dunne stars as the title character in George Stevens' beautifully wrought film version of the Kathryn Forbes novel via John Van Druten's stage adaptation. Returning, in memory, to her childhood in 1910 San Francisco, novelist Katrin Hanson (Barbara Bel Geddes) thinks of the importance of her mother Marta's (Dunne) role in the life of the family of Norwegian immigrants. As she deals with the children's problems and aspirations, such as brother Nels' (Steve Brown) schooling, Katrin's writing ambitions, young Dagmar's (June Hedin) illness, and a thousand other daily dramas, Marta manages to make all feel equally loved. She's also able to deal with eccentrics like the blustery family patriarch, Uncle Chris Halvorsen (Oscar Homolka), the family's highly literary non-paying tenant Jonanthan Hyde (Cedric Hardwicke), and spinster Aunt Trina (Ellen Corby), who is almost afraid to announce her forthcoming wedding. A final gesture of Marta's generosity at Katrin's graduation is symbolic of the spirit that is her legacy. Despite its potential for sentimentality, the film is redeemed by its nearly flawless execution as well as its insights into the most familiar aspects of domestic life. Superbly written, acted, and directed, perhaps the film's best performer is cinematographer Nick Musuraca, whose extraordinary deep-focus compositions remind one of the equal significance of every character.

MAN TROUBLE, the fifth collaboration between Jack Nicholson and director Bob Rafelson, is a comical thriller. Nicholson plays Harry Bliss, who runs a guard dog service and is going through counseling with his wife, Adele(Lauren Tom). A serial killer is on the loose in Los Angeles, and when the apartment of classical singer Joan Spruance (Ellen Barkin) is ransacked and she starts receiving threatening phone messages, Joan moves into the Hollywood Hills home of her sister, Andy (Beverly D’Angelo). However, Joan doesn't feel safe there either, because she's harassed by Andy’s ex-lovers. So Joan hires a guard dog from Harry's company, and soon Harry is providing more than protection for the beautiful singer. Harry is a natural-born liar who, because of his profession, feels that he lives by a code of honor--even if he can’t quite explain it--and Nicholson plays him with comic exasperation, as one thing after another spins out of his control. The usually tough-looking Ellen Barkin is soft and vulnerable, as she is badgered by her conductor husband, harassed by unknown callers, menaced by men from her sister's past, and "helped" by Harry. Harry Dean Stanton and Saul Rubinek provide fine support.

Insightful, moving performances make ONCE AROUND, Lasse Hallstrom's family comedy-drama, a unique and memorable film. The Bella family is a close as any--maybe too close. Sisters Jan (Laura San Giacomo) and Renata (Holly Hunter) are together on the day of Jan's wedding. Jan is marrying her dream man (Tim Guinee), yet still carrying on an affair with another man (Jim Redstone), while Renata has just faced the reality that her live-in boyfriend (Griffin Dunne) will never marry her. Renata soon finds herself living at home again, and regressing easily into the role of the failed but beloved daughter to smart, beautiful Marilyn (Gena Rowlands) and fair-minded Joe (Danny Aiello). Vowing to pull her life together, she takes a new job selling condo timeshares on the island of St. Thomas. There, she meets arrogant, gregarious, and overconfident Sam Sharpe (Richard Dreyfuss), a super salesman from a Lithuanian family, who is as madly in love with her as she is with him. It is this dedicated, loving, and eccentric relationship that, ironically, begins to pull the close-knit Bellas apart. What lies ahead for all is a complex patchwork of familial disharmony, undying loyalty, cultural tradition, tragedy, and triumph. The interplay between family members, their closeness and resentments, permeate an unusual story with characters that are each unique and unforgettable.

Four stories about robots make up Greg Pak's inventive, comedic science-fiction film. In My Robot Baby, a couple of aspiring parents go to an adoption agency, anticipating their first child. However, instead of the human baby they expected, they are given a robot baby as a parenting test. Equipped with computer sensors, the robot baby monitors its parents' caregiving, recording such crucial information as when it is fed and how often it is cuddled. However, when its father is called away on a business trip, mom is left with a significant burden--a very bad robot. Next, in The Robot Fixer, which is the most effective and moving story of the bunch, a mother and daughter tend to their son/brother, who has fallen into a coma after being hit by a car. Going to his apartment, they find a neglected collection of Microbots, and they decide to reassemble the bots piece by piece--finding arms, legs, and other accoutrements at garage sales and in toy stores. Machine Love is the most outrageous of the vignettes. It is the story of a G9 iPerson, the newest model of personal computer in the year 2007. The computer appears to be an actual person who looks like an office worker and is programmed not only to perform work, but to adapt to office culture. When the iPerson meets his love interest, his programming proves to be very multifunctional. In the final installment of ROBOT STORIES, entitled Clay, an old man living in 2027 prepares to die. Longing for the wife he lost long before, he debates whether to die a natural death or undergo "scanning," a process by which his consciousness may live on after his body is gone. ROBOT STORIES is a unique and truly entertaining film.

In a testimony to the power of tolerance, filmmaker Menachem Daum, his wife, and their sons travel to a Polish town where his father-in-law and his two brothers hid from the Nazis with a non-Jewish family for 28 months. Daum proposes the journey when he becomes increasingly worried that his ultraorthodox sons, who live in Israel, have become affected by a culture of interfaith intolerance and distrust. At first, Daum's family resists his idea, unwilling to explore the country of their family's persecution. But eventually they agree to go along. His father-in-law fears for their safety, and also worries that the Muchas, the family who hid him, will demand compensation or express anger over his failure to keep in touch with them after the war. As they travel to the Mucha farm, the family visits sites important to their history--visiting relatives' graves, and giving a blessing at a former synagogue--both emblems of a once-thriving Jewish community. Later, as Daum's wife and sons tour the farm, their cynicism gives way to raw emotion. After so many years, the Muchas find the expression of gratitude they seem desperately to have desired, and the Daums tearfully piece together their history. Ultimately Daum's journey begins to heal wounds between the two families and provides a solid foundation from which to increase interfaith tolerance, within his own family and the world.

Australian television was considerable brightened by the arrival of PRISONER CELL BLOCK H in 1979. Although the activities in a women's prison might sound like grim subject matter, the show carried a neat dose of kitsch value, thanks to some poorly constructed sets, and storylines which were often unfathomable. But this was coupled with an innovative--and daring for the time--use of lesbian characters, violence, and drug mishaps. Presented here are some of the best episodes from the show, beginning with four installments from the early days, which helped establish some of the key characters. Secondly, a major plot development is ushered in via a terrorist siege that took place in the prison, and finally the conclusion of the show is rendered in dramatic style, with a huge riot breaking out. Fun and dramatic in equal measures, PRISONER CELL BLOCK H attracts a hardcore legion of devotees who will doubtless be delighted with this 25th anniversary celebration of the show.

The world of Sister Helen Travis has unfolded in a manner which most nun's are totally unaccustomed to. Based in New York City, Sister Helen works within the South Bronx as a councillor for recovering drug addicts. But that's really only the tip of the iceberg in the Sister Helen story, as filmmakers Rob Fruchtman and Rebecca Cammisa highlight in this absorbing documentary. Her husband and sons all passed away due to their drug habits, and Helen herself is a recovering addict. Straight-talking and unafraid of using coarse language, this miraculous survivor is not afraid to tell it like it is. Taking a "tough love" approach to her patients, Sister Helen inspires both awe and fear in the people she works with, but her impressive recovery record speaks for itself. This candid portrait of her life paints a startling picture of a strong woman capable of delivering a single-minded vision on how life should be lived, with the intimidating figure of Sister Helen lingering in the memory long after the credits have rolled.

After appearing as the ghost of Hamlet's father in Michael Almereyda's 2000 film version of the Bard's classic story, which also starred Ethan Hawke, Julia Stiles, and Kyle MacLachlan, Sam Shepard invited the director to make a behind-the-scenes documentary on the rehearsals for Shepard's play THE LATE HENRY MOSS at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco. The stage work, based on Shepard's own father, who was a Fulbright scholar whose life and career fell apart in a haze of alcohol, featured a remarkable cast, including Nick Nolte, Sean Penn, Woody Harrelson, and Cheech Marin, with music by T-Bone Burnett. Almereyda followed the action onstage, in the dressing rooms, in bars, and at Shepard's ranch, where the usually private playwright spoke openly about his relationship with his father. Although Nolte and Penn--and even Shepard himself--are well known for not being forthcoming with their personal lives, they open up in remarkable ways for Almereyda, sharing fascinating stories about their experiences and their work. THIS SO-CALLED DISASTER is a thrilling look at the creation of art from a myriad of compelling angles.

TIBET: CRY OF THE SNOW LION is a dramatic documentary that takes viewers through the astonishing recent political history of the country. Spending over ten years making the film, director Tom Peosay presents a clear, concise, educational chronology that tracks the major events and developments in the Tibet-China conflict both within those two countries and internationally. The film shows the beauty of the country's Himalaya Mountains, the artistry of Tibetan clothing and monasteries, the practices of the Buddhist religion, and the gentle spirit of the Tibetan people. But the most powerful part of the film includes archival news coverage, interviews with politicians and historians, and testimonials from survivors of torture and imprisonment. Woven together, these pieces tell the story of the immensely disturbing, violent ongoing struggle resulting from Tibet's occupation by China. The film does an excellent job with its material, and viewers will find themselves searching for a solution and an answer to Tibet's problems long after the movie's conclusion.

The desire to shed or suppress all traces of one's original culture has been a primal experience of nearly all immigrants; Joan Micklin Silver's adaptation of Abraham Cahan's story makes clear that it's a process edged with pathos. Carol Kane stars as Gitl, an Eastern European Jew who arrives with her child on Ellis Island in 1896 to join her husband, Jake (Stephen Keats). She is surprised to discover that Jake has abandoned the mores of his culture by cutting off his beard and earlocks, and he's adopted the mannerisms of his new country, including a new girlfriend (Dorrie Kavanaugh) who runs a dance hall. Gitl, unwilling to part with traditions so easily, creates a rift in the marriage that is difficult to overcome. Kane, who was nominated for an Oscar, and Micklin Silver, in her directorial debut, collaborate to high-caliber effect in this touching, amazingly painstaking evocation of immigrant life on New York's Lower East Side in the 1890s.

Director Kristian Levring, in this Dogme 95-inspired, 1920s period melodrama, provides a chilling look at the power of greed and sex. Seeking to make a quick fortune and to carry on an unconventional relationship, Sarah Morris (Janet McTeer, who cowrote the script) and her younger lover Hamish (J.J. Field) travel to the jungle to survey land for an English trading company. Instead of an exotic hideaway, the pair discovers a remote camp where the residents, after decades in the jungle, have become preoccupied with seizing control of the company fortune. Shrewish Mrs. Jones (Brenda Fricker) maintains tight control--doting on her sycophant nephew Norton (Philip Jackson), and constantly belittling the others, including her socially stunted son William (Tony Maudsley). Sarah and Hamish quickly find themselves in a Joseph Conrad-esque hell, and when Hamish falls ill and the company's money runs out, Sarah finds herself faced with a life-altering moral decision. Using minimal lighting, spare sets and costume design, and slow pacing, director Levring creates a claustrophobic atmosphere appropriate to the descent into madness and desperation faced by the characters. Superbly acted by the entire cast, Olympia Dukakis stands out as Erina, who, having grown up with the boorish William, has accepted her unrequited love for him and has settled for acting as his occasional sexual servant. Evoking films such as AT PLAY IN THE FIELDS OF THE LORD, THE INTENDED provides biting commentary on the detrimental effects of colonialism and capitalism and an interesting sociological lesson in isolation and aggression.

Cecil B. DeMille, Paramount's master showman, would revisit the biblical epic many times over the course of his long and varied career, culminating in 1956 with his grand-scale version of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. The beginning of his lifelong fascination with biblical history can be seen in this silent interpretation of the life of Christ that combines DeMille's love of visual spectacle and historical realism with his penchant for high melodrama. DeMille retells the story from the point of view of Mary Magdalene (Dorothy Cumming), once a courtesan for the decadent and gluttonous empire of Rome, who is made pure by Jesus' (H.B. Warner) love. Taking text directly from the Bible, DeMille follows Jesus' rise to greatness as he humbly performs miracles and amasses thousands of devout followers. Jesus is introduced in the film through the healed eyes of a blind child, aglow with the light of faith. DeMille stylishly combines early Hollywood glamor with deep religious reverence in this classic adaptation that culminates in a Technicolor segment depicting the Resurrection. The film was remade by Nicholas Ray in 1961, with Jeffrey Hunter in the lead role.

Elaine May's tense, well-paced thriller is her third film, and one of her most innovative. Using three cameras that she sometimes left running for hours, May captured a spontaneous, real interaction between actor Peter Falk (of the TV series COLUMBO), and actor (and maverick director) John Cassavetes. Their relationship and their personalities drive this portrait of one evening in their thirty-year friendship. When Nicky calls Mikey yet again to bail him out of trouble--this time a contract on his life for money that he stole from his mob boss--Mikey, as always, shows up to help. Overcoming the obstacles of Nicky's paranoia and blind fear, Mikey gets him out of the hotel where he has holed up, and starts to help him plan his escape; however, Nicky keeps changing the plan, and a hit man is hot on their trail. As they try to make their escape, the two friends have to confront issues of betrayal, regret, and the value of friendship versus self-preservation. The performances of Falk and Cassavetes make this much more than a gangster movie--it's a compelling portrait of human foibles, loyalty, and inner conflict.

Michael Haneke's TIME OF THE WOLF is an emotionally riveting film that takes place in post-apocalyptic rural France. Keeping the film at a constantly tense level even though the characters are for the most part calm and logical, Haneke has mastered the art of controlling his audience. Viewers will find it hard to look away from the screen--or even move in their seats--as they sit frozen by the powerful performances of Isabelle Huppert and Anais Demoustier. The story follows a family of four who load up their supplies and retreat from Paris after a disaster leaves the water contaminated and livestock sickened, causing the government to put sanctions of food and fuel. Arriving at their country house, the family is attacked, their patriarch is murdered, and their supplies are stolen, leaving Anne (Huppert), Eva (Demoustier) and the fragile young Ben (Lucas Biscombe) to wander the bleak countryside in a fervent search for justice and protection. Settling into a makeshift commune in a railroad station, the threesome struggle to make it through each day among chaos, prostitution and rape, competitive barter for food and water, and long episodes of their companions screaming or sobbing. Depressing and frightening, yet totally compelling, TIME OF THE WOLF is a myth with epic feeling. Most of the action takes place off-screen as the protagonists react, and this method of storytelling infuses the film with natural suspense. The result is one great big deep and eerie shiver.

The deeply expressive, down-to-earth Mathilde Seigner stars in this beautiful, scenic film as Sandrine, a 30-year-old woman who has decided to give up her career as a computer engineer in Paris to be an agriculturist. She returns to school, which is half textbook work and half hands-on farming experience (viewers may want to cover their eyes for Sandrine's lesson in slaughtering a hog). Soon after, she buys a farm in the Rhône-Alps region of France, a rugged mountainous area where the springtime views and clear air are the payoff for the intense isolated winters. There's only one hitch in Sandrine's plan: the cold and curmudgeonly former owner, Adrien (Michel Serrault), will live on the property for an additional 18 months before leaving the farm to retire. As Sandrine learns to run her new farm, coming up with business innovations of which Adrien could never have dreamed, he looks on in silent admiration but keeps his door shut to her. Finally, the two learn to communicate, teaching each other some valuable lessons. This understated film, which makes the French Alps look like paradise, shows two very lonely sides of life: Sandrine's as a young single woman who has not yet found a companion, and Adrien's as a man in his last years of life whose wife has already passed on. This film was included in the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema 2002 festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.

Directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, INFERNAL AFFAIRS is a tense thriller featuring Hong Kong superstars Andy Lau and Tony Leung. The film follows the parallel lives of Ming (Lau), a cop who secretly reports to ruthless Triad crime boss Sam (Eric Tsang); and Yan (Leung), an undercover police officer who poses as a Triad member in Sam's gang. For Yan, the years of living in the criminal underworld have taken their toll, and he longs to return to regular police duty. However, the only person who knows Yan's true identity is his mentor Superintendent Wong (Anthony Wong), also the unsuspecting superior of Ming. When Wong's officers come face to face with Sam's gang, both leaders realize there are moles in their midst. Soon Yan and Ming must track each other down, leading to an inevitable confrontation. Unlike many contemporary Hong Kong films, INFERNAL AFFAIRS steers clear of over-the-top action in favor of a more stylized and subdued story that builds on emotional and psychological tension. Leung is riveting as the undercover cop who desperately wants a normal life, while Lau instills his corrupt character with confidence and charm that mask his deep inner conflict. These two stellar turns are ably supported by veteran actors Wong and Tsang, along with Sammi Cheng and Kelly Chen. A huge blockbluster in Asia, INFERNAL AFFAIRS is a landmark of Hong Kong cinema that deserves the same status abroad. Part of the New Directors/New Films 2003 series presented by The Department of Film and Media at the Museum of Modern Art and the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.

An enigmatic woman seeking psychiatric help mistakes the office of her doctor for the tax attorney that works next door. Before he can correct her, she has already told the tax attorney too much about her personal life. Mutually committed now that secrets have been shared, they continue making appointments with each other, using the fluke of their meeting and their mistaken identities as a role play. Because Anna (Sandrine Bonnaire) is not seeing a professional analyst, she has no problem bending the truth of what she says and reinventing herself through each subsequent meeting. Meanwhile, William (Fabrice Luchini), who feels her neediness for him and receives her confessions with openness, imagines himself to be an emotional giant and romantic outlet, something his tax-attorney identity would never allow. By consulting his neighbor, the real psychiatrist (Michel Duchaussoy), William is granted the approval he needs to let his fantasy with Anna run its course. Director Patrice Leconte has a penchant for characters who pretend to be somebody they're not and in the process become that person (MAN ON THE TRAIN, GIRL ON THE BRIDGE), and this movie is his most pronounced meditation on that theme. The story, by Jerome Tonnerre, is likable and passionate without ever being saccharine or predictable. While the majority of the film takes place in the conservative space of William's office, the strong characters with all of their quirks and subtleties create a current of mystery which is INTIMATE STRANGERS' greatest strength.

A quaint story about the friendship between two aging men, KITCHEN STORIES is packaged as a comedy with a very strange premise. It is based on research conducted in Sweden in the 1950s when women were observed in the kitchen for a study to determine the best housework techniques. In the film, a fictional plotline concerns a team of Swedish scientists--all men--hired to observe bachelors living alone in Norway. Their methods are absurd. The observers live in funny little trailers outside their subjects' houses. They sit in high, intimidating chairs placed in the corner of their subjects' kitchens where they take notes on a clipboard. Finally, there is a strict rule that the observer and the subject must not speak to each other or make contact of any kind. This last rule is impossible to follow, and in the case of observer Folke (Tomas Norstrom) and subject Isak (Joachim Calmeyer) it is ignored. The two aging men become fast friends, passing wintry afternoons in the rural countryside sipping coffee, smoking pipes, and telling each other fantastic stories. Writer-director Bent Hamer has created a sweet and pleasing comedy with KITCHEN STORIES, using excellent photography, interesting colors, and great performances to make a success of a uncomplicated plot.

They return again and again to one story in particular, that of Vaino, who is forced to relocate after NATO paves over his home. His resettlement, however, proves to be less than easy and filled with comic misunderstandings. As the radio hosts are drawn more and more into Vaino's story, the line between reality and fantasy becomes indistinguishable and their own hopes and dreams are laid bare.

This debut feature film by Joshua Marston tells the suspenseful and absorbing story of Maria, a poor, pregnant Columbian teenager (Catalina Sandina Moreno) with a soul-crushing job at a flower plantation and a rebellious streak. Her multigenerational, all-female family relies too much on her as the principle breadwinner, squandering her earnings on medicines of questionable value for her sister's baby. This drives Maria to quit, dump her immature boyfriend, and go to Bogotá where she tumbles into work as a drug mule. Like thousands of real-life Columbians, she earns money by flying to New York City with up to a kilogram of tightly wrapped heroin pellets in her stomach, risking prison or worse: instant death should even one of the pellets break open inside her. Marston based the film on actual interviews with airport customs agents and former mules; the result is an authentic, intensely cinematic experience. The camera wrings vivid color and mood from the many on-location settings and doesn't shy away from any aspect of Maria's journey, making this succeed as a suspense film, character study, and detailed examination of a rarely seen aspect of the drug wars. Thanks to the superb performance and charisma of lead actress Moreno--in her film debut--the audience stays riveted to her plight every step of the way. MARIA FULL OF GRACE made its debut at Sundance where it won the Audience Drama Award.

He Ping, the director of the cult classic SWORDSMAN IN DOUBLE FLAG TOWN and the better-known RED FIRECRACKER, GREEN FIRECRACKER, enters the big time with WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, an epic battle between two heroic figures fighting for themselves and for their countries. When Li (Jiang Wen) refuses to kill innocent women and children, he becomes a rogue soldier without a land. Master swordsman Lai Xi (Nakai Kiichi) is ordered to assassinate him if wants to get back to to his home in Japan and see his mother before she dies. But first they must join together to help a caravan with precious cargo make its way safely across the desert--with a beautiful woman, Wen Zhu (SHAOLIN SOCCER's Zhao Wei), caught in between them. The gorgeous cinematography is by Zhao Fei, who shot such Asian epics as RAISE THE RED LANTERN as well as such Woody Allen films as SWEET AND LOWDOWN and SMALL TIME CROOKS. The lush look of the film is echoed by A.R. Rahman's marvelous score and outstanding costuming and set design. Ping masterfully recreates seventh-century China as horses and camels lead the protagonists down the famous Silk Road during the time of the Tang Dynasty.

Danish director Lone Scherfig presents her second Dogme-style film, following her sweet and subtly brilliant ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS, with this English-language drama set in Glasgow, Scotland. The charmingly dilapidated used bookstore where most of the film takes place creates an atmosphere of comforting humility. However, the plot stands in direct contrast to that, laying a depressing blanket of helplessness over the generally likeable, attractive characters. Wilbur (Jamie Sives) does not really want to kill himself but he keeps his older brother Harbour (Adrian Rawlins) very busy trying to prevent his disingenuous suicide attempts. When Wilbur is rejected by the therapists at the counseling center, Harbour accepts him as a roommate, taking on the responsibility of preserving his brother's life. Wilbur's perpetual foul mood and misanthropy permeate Harbour's otherwise kind and hopeful persona. He even manages to ruin Harbour's wedding to a needy single mother (Shirley Henderson). To the extent that suicidal tendencies carry a certain irony, WILBUR WANTS TO KILL HIMSELF has its funny moments. Even so, its truest strength is its fantastically emotive performances, and Scherfig's ability to make even the simplest gesture have a pronounced and weighty impact.

Conrad is a successful CEO at an ad agency whose lover has left him due to his overwhelming tendency to be a control freak. Though an attractive man, Conrad opts to hire a prostitute for sex rather than risk emotional involvement, but when Ian arrives at his door he is unable to understand why such a nice boy chooses to sell himself for a living. Consequently, Conrad offers the hot Aussie hustler a job at his agency in exchange for bi-weekly sexual favors. The complications that ensue for both men attempting to navigate the sticky territory of money, sex, and love, are both amusing and highly moving.

In the tradition of French cross-dressing comedies like LA CAGE AUX FOLLES comes MY WIFE MAURICE (MA FEMME...S'APPELLE MAURICE). Director Jean-Marie Poiré (who also made the French comedy THE VISITORS) brings to the film a frantic comedic pace, colorful visuals, and sense of the absurd that has been compared to early Almodovar. When a philanderer's spurned mistress follows him back to Paris to confront him and his wife, the womanizer panics. He manages to convince a humanitarian worker to dress up in drag to shock his angry mistress and scare her away. What he doesn't foresee is that his initial plan cascades into a flood of misunderstandings and comic situations, and he just digs himself a deeper and deeper hole. The famous French comic duo of Régis Laspalès and Philippe Chevaillier star in the film, which has been shown at gay and lesbian film festivals around the world.

Suspense/Mystery

Charley Varrick (Universal)
Comedy veteran Walter Matthau stars as the eponymous small-time bank robber in a rare return to the kind of straight roles he played at the start of his career. After he and his younger partner, Harman Sullivan (Andrew Robinson), take down a small bank in Tres Cruces, New Mexico, Charley realizes that the $750,000 the bank turned over is very likely mob money. The sticky-fingered Harman wants to keep the money, and, although Charley warns him that the mob will soon be on their tail, the crooks opt for escape. Meanwhile, Molly (Joe Don Baker), a ruthlessly Terminator-like hit man, is in close pursuit of the thieves, wreaking destruction on everything in his path. Police dectective Mr. Garfinkle (Norman Fell), less frightening, but no less persistent, is also on their trail. The cagey bank robber realizes he'll need a phony visa to get out of the country but must pay heavy coin to knowing photographer Jewel Everett (Sheree North) to do the dirty work. Thanks to Matthau's sardonic performance and some tasty dialogue from veteran scripters Dean Riesner and Howard A. Rodman, this well-paced, suspenseful caper film, laden with patented Don Siegel violence, is an extremely enjoyable experience.

TV Shows - Comedies

Everybody Loves Raymond (The Complete Second Season) (HBO)
A surprise hit when it first aired in 1996, EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND has found its legs as one of television's most enduring and entertaining sitcoms. Comedian Ray Romano developed the series around his successful standup routines where he lampooned the married life of the everyman. The comedian stars as an altered version of himself, Ray Barone, a Long Island sportswriter who has the wife of his dreams, Debra (Patricia Heaton). Unfortunately, their life of bliss is constantly being interrupted by Ray's bickering parents, Frank (Peter Boyle) and Marie (Doris Roberts), as well as his dopey brother Robert (Brad Garrett), who all live close by. This release includes every episode from the series' second season, which explores issues of family dynamics with a constant injection of hilarity.

The show that FOX Network deemed too outspoken and brash for prime time, and which it ultimately dropped from its roster, has since experienced record DVD sales and become the most-watched show ever aired on the Cartoon Network. Among many other distinctions, the animated family series goes where even THE SIMPSONS fears to tread, with its bumbling oaf of a father, outcast teenage daughter, beefy blockhead son, urbane alcoholic dog, and murderous baby with plans for world domination. This collection features five episodes handpicked by creator Seth MacFarlane, which comprise his personal favorites: "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein," "Road to Rhode Island," "To Live and Die in Dixie," "I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar, and "Lethal Weapons."

One of the most popular and innovative television series in history, M*A*S*H aired for a record eleven years, and its finale episode attracted a larger number of viewers than any other single episode before or since. Based on Robert Altman's feature film of the same name, and set during the Korean War, the show was initially conceived as a critique on the Vietnam War, but eventually adopted a more character-driven, rather than situation- or issue-driven, plot. With a large ensemble cast, a few main players were in evidence, including "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda) and his buddy John McIntyre, two top-notch doctors more interested in booze and women than operating. Dr. Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and the Senior Nurse, Lieutenant Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit) were the two staunch military enforcers who were forever trying to get the two "playboys" court martialed. Ltd. Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) was the ostensible camp commander, but the place was really run by Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff), who had superhuman hearing and knew what Blake was thinking before Blake did himself. Max Klinger (Jamie Farr) was the corporal constantly in pursuit of a section 8 discharge, and Father Francis Mulcahy (William Christopher) was the kindly local priest. Season 7 includes the episodes: "Commander Pierce, "Peace On Us," "Our Finest Hour," "None Like it Hot," "Major Ego," "Baby, it's Cold Outside," "Dear Comrade," "The Young And The Restless," "Hot Lips is Back in Town," "Rally Round the Flagg, Boys," "Ain't Love Grand," "The Party," and many others.

Popular country music singer Reba McIntyre stars in this hit family comedy series that airs on the WB channel. Reba is a recently-divorced parent of three, whose dentist husband Brock (Christopher Rich, MURPHY BROWN) has left her for his painfully perky--and pregnant--assistant, Barbra Jean (Melissa Peterman, FARGO). Simultaneously, she learns that her 17-year-old daughter Cheyenne (JoAnna Garcia, FREAKS AND GEEKS, PARTY OF FIVE, AMERICAN PIE 2) is pregnant as well, and she intends to marry her football-star boyfriend, Van ((Steve Howey). Reba's daughter Kyra (Scarlett Pomers, STAR TREK: VOYAGER) is in the early stages of a rebellious and precocious adolescence, while her youngest son Jake (Mitch Holleman, DADDIO) maintains a calm within the storm. The trials and travails of this offbeat family are presided over by the take-charge, loving Reba, who manages to save the day almost every time, and whose motherly wisdom and openhearted good humor carries the show. In the first season Brock and Reba navigate the sticky terrain of their newly-defined relationship, Cheyenne and Van get married and deal with the difficulties of attending high school as a pregnant couple, and Kyra deals with the pains of her first crush. Included are the pilot episode, as well as"The Honeymoon's Over or Now What?" "Someone's at the Gyno with Reba," "You Make Me Sick," "The Steaks Are High," "The Man and the Moon," "Tea and Antipathy," "Don't Know Much About History," "When Good Credit Goes Bad," "Meet the Parents," "A Mid-Semester's Night Dream," "Brock's Swan Song," "The Story of a Divorce," "You May Kick the Bride," " Vanny Dearest," "He's Having a Baby," "She Works Hard for Their Money," "Labor of Love," "The King and I," "Up a Treehouse with a Paddle," and "It Ain't Over till the Red-Head Sings."

All good things must come to an end, and sadly that's true for one of the brightest, breeziest comedies to ever adorn the HBO schedules. That's right, this is the sixth and final (sob!) outing for the ladies from SEX AND THE CITY. Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is joined once again by her three best friends, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristen Davis) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) as they parade around the Big Apple looking for love and expensive footwear. But naturally these girls want to go out with a bang (quite literally in Samantha's case!), so viewers can put down the tissues and pick up the action as the ladies offer plot twists galore before hanging up their costly Prada jackets for the last time. The laughs come thick and fast throughout, and a few tears are shed as the show builds to its gripping double-episode climax, entitled "An American Girl In Paris (Part Une and Part Deux)." They may be gone, but with this collection as a reminder, they'll certainly never be forgotten.

Fox's ever-popular slacker family from the fictional town of Springfield continue their antics in the fifth season of the animated series. Clever, dry humor, peppered with pop-culture references and witty inside jokes with the audience, continue to characterize this smart show. In this season, Homer goes back to college and tries to teach the nerds to party, with predictably disastrous results; Bart goes to work for Krusty the Klown and experiences his 15 minutes of fame; Mr. Burns tries to reclaim his long lost toy bear, Bobo, from a fiercely resistant Maggie Simpson; and The Ramones make their famed appearance, playing at Mr. Burns' birthday party. Other episodes included are "Homer's Barbershop Quartet," "Marge on the Lam," "Boy Scoutz N the Hood," "$pringfield (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)," "Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy," and "The Boy Who Knew Too Much."

TV Shows - Drama

Carnivale (The Complete First Season) (HBO)
Like a cross between TWIN PEAKS and THE GRAPES OF WRATH, HBO's acclaimed television drama CARNIVALE fashions an allegorical fable about the mythic battle of good and evil set against the surreal backdrop of a Depression-era travelling circus. Having lost both his farm and family to the 1930s Dust Bowl, recent prison escapee Ben Hawkins (Nick Stahl, IN THE BEDROOM, BULLY) joins an itinerant carnival in a desperate bid to escape poverty, the police, and his own discomfort with his miraculous healing powers. Ben's story is juxtaposed with that of California preacher Justin Crowe (Clancy Brown, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION), whose evangelical ministries with sister Iris (Amy Madigan) take on increasingly sinister overtones and hint at an eventual confrontation between himself and young Hawkins--whose fate seems somehow intertwined with his own through the mysterious figure of former circus showman Henry Scudder (John Savage). As the series leisurely builds to this apocalyptic showdown, there is much drama to be found in the daily goings-on of the carnival denizens. Lorded over by the pint-sized Samson (TWIN PEAKS' Michael J. Anderson) and the strangely unseen "Management," the ragtag collection of sideshow freaks features blind soothsayer Lodz (Patrick Bauchau); his bearded-lady companion Lila (Debra Christofferson); matronly snake charmer Ruthie (Adrienne Barbeau); her strongman son Gabriel (Brian Turk); Siamese twins Alexandria and Caledonia (Karyne and Sarah Steben); the lizard-man Gecko (notorious "NEA Four" performance artist John Fleck); and, most intriguingly, catatonic tarot-card reader Apollonia (Diane Salinger), who communicates telepathically with her sensitive but troubled daughter Sophie (Clea DuVall). Rounding out the eccentric troupe are wounded former baseball-player-turned-roustabout Jonesy (Tim DeKay) and a family of strippers and prostitutes comprised of mother Rita Sue (Cynthia Ettinger); her daughters Libby (Carla Gallo) and Dora Mae (Amanda Aday); and their pimpish father Stumpy (Toby Huss). Creator Daniel Knauf surrounds this impressive cast with impeccable period-piece production design, a rotating roster of directorial talent that includes Alison Maclean (JESUS' SON) and Rodrigo Garcia (fittingly, son of magical-realist writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez), and innovative storytelling that is at once supremely creepy, intellectually provocative, and emotionally gripping. This collection includes all 12 episodes of the series' highly addictive first season.

ABC News Presents: Jesus, Mary and DaVinci (Koch)
Author Dan Brown's book THE DA VINCI CODE is a huge-selling novel that opened up some prescient debate about the life of Christ. Filmmaker Elizabeth Vargas takes some of the ideas from Brown's book and develops them in this engrossing film. Uncommon ideas spring forth, such as whether Jesus was married, and whether he has any descendents walking the earth today. Thoughts on Mary Magdalene are also disseminated, with Vargas exploring the possibility that she was Jesus's wife, and bore his child. A global scurry through various important locations such as Italy, France, and Scotland is conducted in order to provide some meat for the bones of Vargas's theories, making this a riveting way to digest some interesting theoretical musings.

Christianity is a worldwide phenomenon, with millions of people across the globe practicing the word of God, and paying fastidious attention to the pages of the Bible. It wasn't always that way, however, as journalist Peter Jennings illustrates in this fascinating exploration of early Christian beliefs. The teachings of Christianity can be traced back to Jesus and Paul, who set down some of the fundamental beliefs in their brief tenure on the planet. Focusing largely on Paul, Jennings shows how he set the religion apart from Judaism, the possible negative effects he had, and how he interacted with Jesus and his family. It all adds up to a fascinating piece of history that is both revealing and highly educational.

Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica (The Complete First Season) (Paramount)
Somehow Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have managed to escape the "Bennifer" curse that plagues most celebrity couples. The world seems to actually like them. Perhaps this is because they are actually married and what's more, have stayed together long enough for several seasons of their hit reality show. While the premise of following two married pop-stars sounds potentially nauseating, the resulting NEWLYWEDS series is actually quite entertaining. Aside from being rich, good-looking, and famous, Nick and Jessica seem to be nice, normal people (that viewers can relate to). But what makes the couple most likeable is their openness. These newlyweds have earned the public's good graces precisely by letting them in. Featuring the entire first season of NEWLYWEDS, this release documents the superstar's struggles to balance their growing careers with the stresses of marital life. Season one features classic "Jessica" moments like when she honestly mistakes Chicken of the Sea tuna for being actual chicken. When teased for this and similar comments, Simpson responded by embracing this "ditzy" humor as her hallmark, prompting suspicions that perhaps it is all an act. Act or no act, it is moments like these that give NEWLYWEDS its comedy and charm. Set off against one another, Nick and Jessica's personalities make for fun, entertaining television.

Battlestar Galactica (The Mini-Series) (Universal)
The popular 1970s sci-fi television show is updated and re-imagined in BATTLESTAR GALATICA. It has been a generation since the Cylons, androids built by mankind to work and serve them, rebelled and disappeared into the cosmos. But now they have returned, bent on destroying the twelve worlds of their former masters. Commander William Adama (Edward James Olmos) manages to escape the destruction with a small portion of the human population on board the Battlestar Galactica, and now searches the far reaches of space for the lost colony of man known as Earth. Unfortunately, the Cylons are still in pursuit, determined to wipe out every trace of the human race. This mini-series of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA updates the original series with a darker tone, new CGI special effects, and by giving the Cylons the ability to mimic their prey, making them all the more dangerous. It shares with THE MATRIX and THE TERMINATOR series a vision of mankind undone by the very machines it created, and the continuing struggle between the mechanical and the organic that will determine the future.

Troll-like, fearsome demons of the past turn into modern superheroes in this winning animated TV show. The GARGOYLES journey begins in 994 A.D. when architectural creatures mounted on the walls of a castle "sleep" in a frozen state during the day and engage in fierce battles at night. Though the gargoyles' main purpose is to protect the castle's inhabitants, they are misunderstood and hated by humans. A spell is cast to immobilize the gargoyles completely, turning them into creepy architectural forms that stand lifeless for ages. In 1994, a wealthy New Yorker buys the castle and decadently moves it to the top of his plush high rise. When the ancient spell is broken, the gargoyles suddenly spring to life in the Big Apple instead of the pastoral fields of the Old Country. This release, which features the 13 episodes of the first season of GARGOYLES, introduces these misunderstood superheroes and shows them adjusting to life in the fast lane.

Explore the depths of the unknown in season one of the TWILIGHT ZONE! Funny at times, heartbreaking at others, THE TWILIGHT ZONE was one of the most unique, creative television shows ever created. Rod Serling developed the series around the premise of following people as they experience things so bizarre they can only be part of a fifth dimension! Rod Serling appears at the start and finish of each episode, acting as the viewer's guide through the TWILIGHT ZONE. Consistently compelling, moral, and thought provoking, the series still inspires remakes and contemporary spin-offs today. Season one contains many of the show's most popular episodes. Episodes include: "Where is Everybody?," "One for the Angels," "Mr. Denton on Doomsday," "Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine," "Walking Distance," "Escape Clause," "The Lonely," "Time Enough at Last," "Perchance to Dream," "Judgement Night," "And Where the Sky Was Opened," "What You Need," "The Four of Us Are Dying," "Third from the Sun," "I Shot an Arrow into the Air," "The Hitch-Hiker," "The Fever," "The Last Fight," "The Purple Testament," "Elegy," "Mirror Image," "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," "A World of Difference," "Long Live Walter Jameson," "People Are Alike All Over," "Execution," "The Big Tall Wish," "A Nice Place to Visit," "Nightmare as a Child," "A Stop at Willoughby," "The Chaser," "A Passage for Trumpet," "Mr. Bevis," "The After Hours," "The Mighty Casey," and "A World of His Own."
