I am so excited about all the cool horror movies coming out this summer! The one I really want to see is Romero's Land of the Dead - the remake of Dawn was okay, but nobody does zombies like Romero!
Two other movies I'm psyched about are that French one, Haute Tension, and the little indie movie that could I keep reading about on the net, Unholy. (Doesn't hurt that Unholy has that hottie from Buffy in it)
So anyone else heard of some good horror movies coming out later this year? |

In my book, "good horror movie" is an oxymoron. At least for the past 25 years. |

Loves me the Nicholas Brendon, glad to see him get a paycheck again. (By the way, IMDB has Unholy listed for 2006. Sorry 'bout the wait.)
And Alex, seriously, you're telling me that none of the horror movies made since 1980 are good? None?? C'mon, man.

Yeah, that statement's a bit extreme. I wouldn't say there haven't been any good horror movies in 25 years. But I would say that they've been getting harder and harder to find, especially in the last decade or so. There are still some gems laying about, though, if you care to look for them. Just don't go expecting much from any mainstream hollywood horror flicks
Oh, and the new Romero film is going to be the shit. _________________ I shouldn't get high to come up with ideas. I should come up with ideas, and THEN get high, to reward myself! |

Silence of the Lambs can be considered a horror movie, and it won a slew of Academy Awards.
I don't like run of the mill slasher films, but there have been many other horror films that have been great. 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, Cabin Fever, John Carpenter's The Thing, The Shining, Near Dark, Innocent Blood, Stir of Echoes, Sixth Sense, The Blob, Night of the Living Dead (90's remake), The Vanishing (not the crap one w/ Kiefer), Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, The Hidden, Hitcher... lots more where that came from.
ETA: Man, how could I have forgotten Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3? Told ya there's lots more.
Re: Unholy - based on the site and the related internet game I think it will be worth the wait. The description is a lot more original than "a bunch of kids die in the woods." Plus, Nicholas Brendan is gorgeous. That alone is enough to make me check it out! |

No one agrees with you.
Glad you liked it, though. I know the feeling of thinking you're the only person on the planet who liked something. (They, House On Haunted Hill...)

Land Of The Dead is going to be interesting seeing George Romero come back to his roots. I want to see how Romero does the continuation of the progression of intellegence with zombies.
Haute Tension, good movie up till the gas station then it becomes predictible. But it does have quite a few jaw dropping scenes in it.
Devil's Rejects and the American remake of Hideo Nakata's Dark Water (based on the book written by Koji Suzuki, author of Ring) will also be hitting the big screen this summer. Also I believe The Woods will be coming out this summer, but I am not too sure on that. |

Now you have. Peanut butter just doesn't scare me.
It's fashionable to trash it nowadays, but The Blair Witch Project is excellent. Joy Ride was very good, despite being essentially a Duel ripoff. I liked Jeepers Creepers. Bubba Ho-Tep (which is kinda sorta horror) is fantastic. Also: Cronenberg's Spider. And that's just stuff from the last seven years or so.

How about a lobotomy spike in the brain pan. Does that scare you?
Session 9 is an excellent flick, but it's not for everyone. People who I was sure would like it have hated it, and vice versa.
also a big fan of Blair Witch, Joy Ride, and Ho-Tep. Jeepers Creepers was great for about 20 minutes, until it started to suck. Spider wasn't a horror movie - just a boring-as-shit one. Crazy dudes mumbling and scribbling in a notebook for an hour and a half don't scare me _________________ I shouldn't get high to come up with ideas. Good call on both of those. I'm glad they've cast Sean Bean in the Silent Hill movie. I just worry that the story, as per usual with video game adaptations, is going to stray too far from the source material (something the last Silent Hill game already did) _________________ I shouldn't get high to come up with ideas. Much like The Machinist. But it was definitely an interesting movie.

But here is the thing "Spider" wasn't labeled a horror movie. The only thing you would be looking at is the fact that David Cronenberg directed it. I hope you didn't think Naked Lunch was a horror movie. Spider was an excellent movie to check out for a drama, which that is the genre that is falls under. Don't mistake M. Butterfly as a horror movie, you'll be sorry!
But then again for an excellent indie horror flick, look towards Bill Paxton's full length directorial debut "Fraility" |

I've always preferred the "nightmare" style of horror to the quick fright. See: Eraserhead, a movie that builds up the tension and the dread to create something that many modern horror movies do not - a foreboding atmosphere. I'm hoping the Silent Hill movie will be closer to the Silent Hill 2 game, my favorite in the series. I've heard good reports about the script so far but, then again, the script was hardly the point of Silent Hill.
On another note, I'd really like to see a Sean Bean movie where his character doesn't meet an untimely end. Hopefully, this will be the one. _________________ It's a strange world |

Count me in as someone who *loved* Joyride. John Dahl is awesome - loved Red Rock West and The Last Seduction, too.
They're making a Silent Hill movie? The games are really frightening, much more so than the Resident Evil series, IMO. I've actually had to set the game down and stop playing because I'd get the shivers or really, really NOT want to explore the next room for fear of what would be found inside. Great game, I only hope the script can be half as good but I don't have a lot of confidence in movies based off video games. |

This, for me, is when horror started to die. It wasn't scary at all, and just far too concerned with being smug and showing it's oh-so-ironic dialogue.
"This is like a horror movie! So one thing we shouldn't do is split up! But we will anyway".
Please. Thankfully little gems like Joy Ride and Session 9 came along to save the day. And ignore the backlash, I still say Blair Witch fucking terrifies.
Plus, lots of good foreign (mainly Eastern) flicks - Ringu, A Tale of Two Sisters... _________________ "We hate the French! We fight wars against the French! Did all those men die in vain on the fields of Agincourt? Was the man who burned Joan of Arc just wasting good matches?" |

Not since seeing The Shining has a horror movie given me nightmares...but I was like 12 then, so...
I do like it when the hair on my arm stands up and the feeling of breath
of cool air on my neck intensifies from watching a good shocker.
Happened last night whilst enjoying White Noise and the lights in my house flickered...but it was from the A/C kicking on....i hope
Session 9- found part of it somewhat okaaaay. A little slooooow.
Hellraiser, Phantasm & Alien movies woohoo the 1st time seeing!!!!!
Had a friend who thought the Ewoks of ROTJ would be spun off into
a horror movie. Reminds me of Critters or also Ghoulies....memories.... _________________ Daniel san! Plaididdy-on....plaididdy off!

Glad to see the Joy Ride love. I thought it was excellent, Duel rip-off or not.
I also enjoyed these other recent (2000-present) horror entries:
Scream trilogy
Wrong Turn (grimy stuff)
House of 1000 Corpses (shut up, okay?! I liked it...)
House of Wax (one day, hopefully, people will realize how fun this movie is)
Blair Witch Project (Took me a couple of viewings to appreciate it)
Below (I loved the atmosphere in this one)
Final Destination
The Grudge
Shaun of the Dead
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (IMHO, better than the original)
The Others
Identity
Dawn of the Dead
28 Days Later
Jeepers Creepers
The Ring
The Mothman Prophecies
Frailty
May
Many others where those came from. _________________ That's just my opinion. You could be wrong.
