I love Stripes a whole lot, but the current DVD is lam-0. So here's some good news courtesy of DVD Answers:
Quote: | Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment has also released artwork for an extended edition of the Ivan Reitman directed Stripes which stars Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Warren Oates, John Candy and John Larroquette. I'm afraid details are still pretty sketchy on this one, although the cover below confirms the addition of eighteen extra minutes, including six deleted scenes. The disc itself will be available to own from the 7th June, priced at $19.94. We'll bring you further details shortly, but for now, here's the artwork: |

Wait a sec... aren't special/extended/elongated versions always sucky? Why can't we just have our movie as we know it?

Dave, the theatrical version is presently available on a DVD that runs about $8.99. I agree that the original version would be a great inclusion, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Hey the LOTR EEs don't have the theatrical cuts.
But I just got a press release, so here's what we DO get:
---Extended Cut DVD edition that includes almost 20 minutes additional of never-before-seen feature footage.
---The STRIPES Extended Cut DVD boasts a one hour "Stars and Stripes" documentary featuring exclusive new interviews with the cast and filmmakers: director Ivan Reitman and producer/writer Dan Goldberg, and stars Harold Ramis, Judge Reinhold, John Larroquette, John Diehl, Sean Young, P.J. Soles and for the first time on DVD, star Bill Murray.
---Six hilarious deleted scenes with Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, P.J. Soles and Sean Young are also new to the Extended Cut DVD.
---Audio commentary with director Ivan Reitman and writer-producer Dan Goldberg[/list] _________________ Scott Weinberg |

Yeah, I suppose I could buy both. But I don't wanna. (At least the LOTR EEs were worth the extra buy - but that's an exception, not the rule.)

A bump to this thread to say a major WHEW:
Snagged a copy, and package art states that both the extended AND original cuts are on the disc. Have yet to watch to verify, but this is very cool news.

Gracias.
Oddly, you cannot watch the extended cut without the new scene "markers."
Sadly, too true. In fact, the whole extended cut is a mess, presentation-wise. They should've just left 'em in the deleted scenes section and ignored the "extended" idea altogether.
Also: So the DVD cover is labeled "extended edition" and has big text explaining that it contains "18 minutes of extra" etc. etc. Why, then, did Columbia feel the need to slap on an ugly, unremovable sticker that also reads "extended edition?" (Funny thing, this sticker mentions that the film contains "almost 20 minutes" extra. That sounds better than 18, right?)
Still, it's a good set, glad to have it.
