So, I was curious about my last name. Where'd it come from? And so I researched all about surnames... and of course we know how they were created, either by your ancestor's profession, or physical characteristic even, or an adjective for the geography they lived around, or of course the town name of where they lived. I was surprised to find my surname is very surely from a district in Scotland. I know little about my ancestry, hence my curiosity.
So, look up your surname! What is it? Surprised? Share if you want.
Can't find your name there, try here, though it's not as helpful for origin. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/laurjane |

Couldn't find "Tatum" but I know it is English. I think it means either "from the loins of Ryan O'Neal" or "giant package," I think I'll go with the latter meaning. _________________ Charles Tatum's Review Archive |

Souter is really pronounced "soo-der." Oh, well...
Somewhere out there is a woman who married into the name "Chowdhury." _________________ Chicago Film Critics Association

I can't find my maiden name, either. (No big surprise.) Does this mean we're basically a bunch of freaks? |

Nothing in this particular database, but we learned not too long ago that Kandel is a small village in Germany where we got the boot in the early 1800's during a purge to Bucharest, Romania (where we thought the name was from). Of course, my great-grandfather came to America in the later 1880's, but didn't like it and went back, just in time for everybody else to enjoy the quaint charm and warm neighborly days of the 1930's. Ooops. _________________ I am L. Pete Morton. |

Newman. Bet you can guess the meaning of that one!
It's English.
Means "new man, newcomer" from the Old English neowe, niwe, nige and mann.
..So basically, my family were the original n00bs. :D |

Another stunning revelation:
MacDonald - son of Donald
But I'm a girl!! Maybe I need to start a name revolution or something.
Almost all of my family both sides are descended from MacDonalds. Different clans and surnames here and there but they all roll up to MacDonald. Except for one Grandmother who was Irish but can't find "Delehanty" in the database. |
