QUOTES
Norbit - Norbit is a tour de force…hysterically funny!
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - Tremendous. One of the most enjoyable pictures of the season.
Live Free or Die Hard - **** The summer’s best action blockbuster! The best in the series! This time the hype is real. Te latest Die Hard film is the best in the series. Recent blockbusters have appeared like oversize computer screens, with a fake-looking Spider-Man swinging through a fake-looking New York skyline. The truth is, nothing in Spider-Man 3…can compare in impact to the straightforward first action sequence in Live Free or Die Hard, in which our hero, John McClane (Bruce Willis), armed with just a handgun, faces down five assassins wielding automatic weapons. Willis looks even more formidable than he did when he made the first Die Hard. He has a caustic, unsentimental understanding of the character and presents us with a McClane whom the years have only made smarter, tougher and more calloused. His two saving graces are his humor and his usefulness. A film of nonstop interest and incident, where the bad guys control everything and the good guys constantly have to scramble. Two hour and 10 minutes go by in a shot, carried along by some great action sequences, including a fight to the death in an elevator shaft. Willis is in his element. Live Free or Die Hard saves its best and most emblematic moment for the finish. I won’t say anything more, except that is takes a classic climactic situation and resolves it in the coolest, most unexpected and most low-tech way imaginable – and in a way that reinforces everything you’ve ever liked about the Die Hard movies and McClane as a character. It’s just terrific.
Sicko - *****!
Evening - 4 Stars! Powerful!
Hairspray - **** It’s movie magic! Not only feels good but can actually transform an entire evening.
No End In Sight - ****
3:10 To Yuma - ****! 3:10 To Yuma achieves an elusive, mythic quality.
Dan In Real Life - Intuitive and inspired.
Jimmy Carter: Man From Plains - ****!
Lions for Lambs - Meryl Streep is a marvel to watch.
No Country for Old Men - Extraordinary! A lament about fate, age, time and life. No Country feels positively Greek in its magnitude…It burrows underneath and makes a home in the pit of your stomach.
Redacted - …made with a clear intention – to stop the Iraq war.
Atonement - *****! Epic! Enormously satisfying! A film that puts viewers on the edge of their seats wanting to know what happens next. _________________ Erik Childress
