both of my dvd players claim 'no disc'!
>>>
tonight i took one of them apart to try and figure out how to fix it.
i also went online to straighten the learning curve, but they all site a dirty lens (not necessarily from watching porn 'x' inches [yeah baby!, although cgi-cock cannot be ruled out, via ky excepted] from the screen) as the cause...
...i cleaned the lens with the recommended version of alcohol (freshly purchased since every other version was readily available...), to no avail.
>>>
does anyone have any other suggestions* besides taking it to someone who knows what they're doing, but charges way too much?
[*given that the machine may have been {ptsd-}jarred...]
>>>
please, i'm (almost) begging you to help me fix at least one of these annoyingly sensitive machines... |

Are they three/four years old or more?
If so, that's about the life span of a player. At some point the laser goes flooey and you've got a paperweight.
If they're not that old, they might just be pieces of shit, or they've been in a place with dust and/or bad air circulation for too long.
At the moment, players are so inexpensive it's far cheaper to buy a new one than to have it fixed. Even region/code-free players have come way down in price.
I assume you've done the bit where you try a bunch of different DVDs in both players. If it's just one or two discs giving you the problem, it could be the discs. Badly manufactured discs are less common these days, but there are still some that can deteriorate. If they're stored in a hot, humid environment they could get fucked up. _________________ But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.

Do you mean that that's the life span of a player that is that old, or that it's the built-in obsolescence that still comes as a gift with purchase...?
Also, thankfully I have tons of paper, that until I sort through, will be very well-weighted...

these suggestions may also apply to my own personal 'malfunctions'...

yes, i thought that perhaps that was the case too because i had taken a couple of timecode explicit dvds home from work to critique for my fellow non-creative-coworkers..., but i also had a couple of newly acquired dvds that i was then eager to view, that were perfectly legit and they (too, all three of them) failed to register as well... |

Sorry about your mom.
And yeah, the life expectancy of a typical DVD player is about four years. At least in my experience. Pretty much like replicants. Except DVD players don't dance with snakes or kill their manufacturers.
Well, at least mine didn't. _________________ But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.

much appreciated.
apparently she was "ready for [her] close-up"; i had no idea "[her] work here was done" {she did look good in capes & hose though, come to think of it. and arms akimbo is a family stance.}
...
bringing my cptr was a prudent decision as it has allowed me to maintain a connection to my 'everyday' life while the sky fell.
...
at this time i would also like to give a big thanks to this very website that has given me somewhere to cut my teeth... |

Interestingly, on my laptop today, two weird things happened with the Raiders of the Lost Ark DVD:
1. It said that the region code -- even though it's a region-1 -- wasn't compatible with my computer
2. It then read the disc as a music CD.
Eventually, it got back up to speed. |

As for the lifespan of DVD players, it seems to vary wildly.
My first player, a Panasonic, stopped functioning a year and a month after purchase. The warranty having conveniently just expired, and the estimated cost of repair (it was the laser) being equivalent to buying a new one, I just dumped it in the garbage and bought a model on clearance, this time a JVC.
Which still functions well six years later. |

Still running a Toshiba (Model SD3108) that I purchased on boxing day in 1998 as my primary DVD player. Yes campers, 1998, when Goss turned two. The player is a damn workhorse and after a vital firmware upgrade in 2000, it plays virtually every R1 DVD out there beautifully in 16x9 and component video, although screener DVD's from filmmakers have a tough time on it for some odd reason. That's where the PS3 comes in handy.
The newer DVD players are garbage, especially all of these $50-100 "upconverting" DVD players. I owned one for a year, locked up on half the discs I played on it, and gave it to my landlord recently. It's his problem now. _________________ "I talked to Jeremy Piven on the phone, and he told me that he discovered that he had a very high level of mercury. Reminds me of when I bought one of those El Cheapo DVD players (of the pop-up lid variety) for all of $25 or something like that as an inexpensive backup. Some DVD's it played perfectly, but for most it just locked up every 10 minutes or so, sometimes not even to match with scene changes. So it was watch the film for 10 minutes, stop, play again, get it back to where it had stopped, watch for 10 minutes, etc.
For some reason, my DVD of "Kind Hearts and Coronets" comes to mind. Watching it on that player must have averaged one restart per D'Ascoyne, but I got through eventually, probably with 30 minutes added to the running time. |
