I haven't seen a one of these, but I am thinking "Biutiful" and "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives" are strong locks. I recognize a few titles from when I enter films from festivals into our database, and I think the people at the Academy who pick these films probably see the titles and countries of origin and go from there. According to the article, both Greenland and Ethiopia are submitting films for the first time, and I found it interesting that Iran and Iraq are submitting titles that feature geographical locations of the area. I get sent a lot of foreign films to review, but I should really focus on that area of Netflix one day!

Here's hoping this survives the winnowing process. I was surprised that it didn't play Fantasia last summer, as Nakashima's previous few films had, but that was apparently because it was being sent to Toronto and other tony places. I selfishly want it to get a nomination because I've not had much opportunity to drag friends to his movies (I think Kamikaze Girls may have spent one night in Boston, and neither Memories of Matsuko nor Paco and the Magic Book got any U.S. releases at all), and an awards-piggybacking release might not just get Confessions in theaters, but might get his other work on video here.
