I admire the decision to honor direct-to-video flicks, but this list is ridiculous:

Animated DVD Premiere Movie
Barbie as Princess and Pauper; Jesyca C. Durchyn and Jennifer Twiner McCarron (Lions Gate)
Bionicle 2: Legends of Metru Nui; Sue Shakespeare (Miramax/Disney)
Care Bears: Journey to Joke-A-Lot; Cynthia Taylor (Lions Gate)
Dragons: Fire & Ice; Jonathan Goodwill (Lions Gate)
The Lion King 1; George A. Mendoza (Disney)

Live-Action DVD Premiere Movie
Bring It On Again; Marc Abraham, Thomas A. Bliss, Kelli Konop (Universal)
Comic Book: The Movie; Scott Zakarin, Eric Mittleman (Miramax/Disney)
Relative Evil; John Cosgrove, Ira Deutchman, Stephen Dyer (Screen Media/Universal)
Species III Unrated Edition; David Dwiggins (MGM)
Tremors 4: The Legend Begins; Nancy Roberts (Universal)

There's a lot more, but it's all a joke. Bring It On Again? Barbie? Care Bears? Species Goddamn Three? This is crap that made me want to break my TV. These are the best DTV movies they could get? Or is there kickback involved?

On the plus side, the group's regular DVD awards are usually good stuff, even though the nominees/winners are always predictable. (Yet another win for Lord of the Rings...) The full nominee list is in the same article. (One gripe, though: School of Rock for Overall DVD? What???)

I'd say it's not so much kickbacks as something like nominees having to be from 'member organizations', or having to be nominated by the distributor, who of course wants the discs they sold more of to be recognized over hidden gems that sold like poopy.

By the way, Video Business Magazine runs a page in each issue declaring the latest "candidates" for year-end awards. It's something like three titles in each category - and it's always just whatever asscrap got released that week. Just a glorified ad for the DVD market, really.
