Yeah, this old game:
Desert Island DVDs.
The rules:
1. Ten items. No more, no less.
2. Movies only. No Futurama, no Arrested Development, no Manimal.
3. Box sets count as one item, which means that the upcoming Porky's trilogy collection would count as one item. Anyone who chooses this specific item will be thrown the fuck off this forum forever. Larger box sets of separately-sold items are also allowed, as well as strategically clever.
4. I reserve the right to create new and totally arbitrary rules as I see fit. _________________ Scott Weinberg |

1. Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection (Psycho / Vertigo / Rear Window / The Birds / Shadow of a Doubt / Family Plot / Frenzy / The Man Who Knew Too Much / Marnie / Rope / Saboteur / Topaz / Torn Curtain / The Trouble with Harry)
2. The Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection (Strangers on a Train Two-Disc Edition / North by Northwest / Dial M for Murder / Foreign Correspondent / Suspicion / The Wrong Man / Stage Fright / I Confess / Mr. and Mrs. Smith)
3. The Bogart Collection (Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep, Treasure of the Sierra Madre) Warner has since distributed these movies between three other
sets, but I choose this one.
4. Star Wars original trilogy collection.
5. The Art of Buster Keaton (The General / Sherlock, Jr. / Our Hospitality / The Navigator / Steamboat Bill Jr. / College / Three Ages / Battling Butler / Go West / The Saphead / Seven Chances / 21 Short Films)
6. Indiana Jones Box Set
7. Essential Art House - 50 Years of Janus Film (at the very least, it gets me Seven Samurai, The Fallen Idol, The Third Man and The Lady Vanishes)
8. Audrey Hepburn Collection (Breakfast At Tiffany's, Roman Holiday, Sabrina)
9. King Kong Collection - I'll probably never watch Son of Kong or Mighty Joe Young, but what the heck.
10. A.I. Artificial Intelligence - Man, I wish there were some sort of Spielberg Box Set to use. But there isn't, so I'll take this one.
I might be trade Audrey Hepburn or A.I. for The Muppet Movie, depending on the day. _________________ Blogs: Jay's Movie Blog, Transplanted Life, The Trading Post |

To me, this is kinda cheating. I only have two box sets listed and they both compile movies you can't buy individually. I would say a seven-disc set of, say, Bond flicks should count as seven films. Otherwise you end up with a Desert Island list of, like, 36 films, when the whole point of a Desert Island list is to whittle it down to the essentials. (If the Indy flicks were sold separately I'd just list Raiders.) Seems to me there should be a cut-off somewhere.
On the other hand, one of my box sets is The Decalogue, which was originally done for Polish TV. But they were also shown theatrically here and elsewhere, so fuck it. _________________ But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.

A more important question: wouldn't the energy being used to play the DVDs be better used to try and get off the island? Or can the ten DVDs be glued together somehow to make an escape raft? Hmm... youcould use the backs as decent reflectors to attract attention from passing ships.
Either way, I guess I'd want those Hitchcock discs in there. |

It sucks to have all these DVDs, and no player or TV...or food |

I am going to boycott the "box set" clause in this particular game. Not because I have any idealogical differences with the rule, but just because I want to make things hard on myself.
1) American Psycho
2) Night of the Living Dead
3) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
4) Yojimbo
5) Aliens
6) Fight Club
7) Goodfellas
8) Army of Darkness
9) Sin City
10) Anchorman

That's a lot of horror dvds for a deserted island...where you'll be alone at night...in the dark... _________________ "We hate the French! We fight wars against the French! Did all those men die in vain on the fields of Agincourt? Was the man who burned Joan of Arc just wasting good matches?" |

I agree with you, Rob. Fuck those giant box sets. I will however take a few "legit" box sets....
Ummm....
Alien Quadrilogy, only because I need the first two.
The Godfather Trilogy, see above.
Brazil -- CC (the crown jewel of my collection, tyvm)
to be contined. I got 7 left. _________________ Scott Weinberg |

See, Brazil to me doesn't really count as a box set, because it's the same flick. True, it's a 3-discer, but all of it is either extras or the "Love Conquers All" version. Same thing with the mega-edition of Sin City or the forthcoming mega-edition of Blade Runner. So even if box sets were disallowed altogether, I'd say editions like those would be admissible. _________________ But I wish the public could, in the midst of its pleasures, see how blatantly it is being spoon-fed, and ask for slightly better dreams.

Assuming these are on DVD:
Cabaret
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Halloween
Pixote
Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie
Batman Begins
All That Jazz (although the Fox Movie Channel plays this every other day)
Star Wars
Pet Shop Boys: PopArt
...and my final disc would be porn, title withheld...
