"Come, son of Jor-EL, kneel before Zod!"
3 stars

Vastly inferior to the first installment to the franchise, this episode finds Superman (Christopher Reeve) revealing his secret identity to Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), while three supervillains from the Phantom Zone (a sort of space prison near Superman's home planet of Krypton) terrorize earth, lead by General Zod (Terrance Stamp). The three bad guys blow a bunch of stuff up, while Supes gives up his powers - to be with Lois - in a Kryptonian phone booth. When he finds out the bad guys are on earth, he hightails it back to the Fortress of Solitude to get his powers back (nevermind how) and kick some superpowered butt.

Cool for the fact that it's got a battle royal between the Big S and the three bad guys on the streets of Metropolis, but lame in the loss (and regaining) of powers. There's also the matter of the three bad guys having powers that Superman doesn't (despite the fact that they're all from the same planet, and all should get their powers from the Earth's yellow sun), Superman using what appears to be Super-cellophane and all four of them having the ability to teleport, and in Supes' case, create holographic fakes of himself.

Oh, and Superman makes Lois forget about his secret identity just by kissing her. Yeah, right.

It's not as bad as the two movies that would follow it, but it's not nearly as good as the first one.

Super-cellophane? Come on.
