Terminal, The
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by DrChumley

"Is it true? A Spielberg movie with no special effects?"
4 stars

The Terminal is the type of film that Steven Spielberg doesn’t make nearly enough: a relatively small, intimate story entirely devoid of special effects and fantasy. It’s not an epic, grandiose film either. But his aptitude with the style of The Terminal shows us once again why Spielberg should be at the top of a very short list of the greatest directors of all time.

Viktor Navorsky (Tom Hanks) arrives in New York from the fictional country of Krakohznia. While in the air, his country descended into war, and the government of Karkohznia was dissolved. Without a visa or passport from a recognized country Navorsky is unable to enter the United States, but with travel to his homeland suspended indefinitely, he is unable to return home. Viktor, however, is a man on a mission, and is determined to fulfill his mission, regardless of how long he has to wait. So, he takes up residence in the airport. Along the way, he meets and becomes friends with airport employees, INS agents, and a beautiful flight attendant (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

The Terminal is, much like an Hanks’ earlier film, Cast Away, a film which is not driven by events so much as by character development. Sequential plot events matter less here than do Viktor’s reactions to them. Usually this kind of story leads to either mind-numbingly slow scripts (Sofia Coppola, I’m talking to you) or scripts rife with melodramatic dialogue and wave upon wave of cheesy cinematic clichés. Screenwriters Andrew Niccol, Sacha Gervasi, and Jeff Nathanson manage to straddle the line between the two. The pacing of the film never slows down too much, but the events of the film are artfully restrained.

The true strength of this film, however, lies equally with the direction of Spielberg and the acting of Hanks. Both manage to convey the monotony and aggravation inherent in all airports (as anyone who has ever had a layover or delay can attest) while at the same time managing to keep the audience riveted. Hanks is able to pull out a little more of his wonderful comedic timing than he has for his last several roles. His emotional depth and breadth is only enhanced by Spielberg’s artfully restrained eye, which has eschewed the fantastic, overarching, magnificent camera work he and his DPs are so famous for, and has, as the story demands, tightened down the focus to the participants of the story.

Even John William’s score is pared back—evoking more of a classic Hollywood romantic comedy soundtrack than the bombastic pomp and circumstance of his usual work.

The Terminal is not a perfect film, by any stretch of the imagination. It does, however, manage to meld the various aspects of a great film together with a precision and aesthetic rarely seen in Hollywood today. It’s the kind of film that can happen with mediocre material in the hands of masters.
