Have you ever sat in a theater surrounded by people who are laughing gleefully at the movie on the screen, and yet you can barely muster a chuckle here or there? After having such an experience in KICKING AND SCREAMING, I had to ask myself "Are these people just incredibly easily entertained morons, or am I just a cynical jaded bastard only capable of laughing at edgy or dark humor anymore?" Thankfully, my friend, who is nowhere near as jaded as me, gave me a sanity check after the show: yup, it was kinda stinky.I got home and discussed it with another friend on-line, then was about to write a review of it when I realized that I already pretty much laid out the salient points in the messenger conversation five minutes ago. Why the fuck would I want to write all that again? And so, I bring you the laziest review I've written since the time I spewed out random thoughts about A CLOCKWORK ORANGE while in a THC-induced haze. But I'm not high this time, folks - just really lazy. But considering how lazy this film is, I figure one mediocre turn deserves another.
"Yawning and Shrugging and (very) occasionally laughing"
ME: You know how funny Farrell was on SNL last night?
FRIEND: Oh lord, I sense a horrible review.
ME: yeah, he was the polar opposite of it in this movie.
FRIEND: Would weed have helped?
ME: it was too watered down, a lazy script, and Farrell was totally hit and miss, mostly miss
FRIEND: Well, good thing I went to see CRASH instead.
ME: yeah dude. And we saw some posters from CRASH afterward, and I was like "I really wish I'd just bitten the bullet and seen that again"
FRIEND: Eh, Farrells capable of causing big laughs, no one would blame you for giving him a chance.
ME: Well, I don't think it was all his fault. He really had a weak script to work with
FRIEND: Basic idiot dad learns a lesson and saves his family from falling apart as a result?
ME: more like son has to compete with asshole father who coaches opposite team, wants only to beat his dad and sacrifices team morale to do it, then learns the true meaning of sportsmanship and big hugs all around. Yawn.
FRIEND: Sounds like so much ass.
ME: Pretty much. He did have a few laugh out loud moments. And the kids were cute and occasionally funny too. But that's the problem. It relies too much on Farrell's shtick and the "ooohh, cute kids" factor, so it doesn't even try in the script department. Insert sports cliche here. Insert sight gag there. Rinse, repeat. And Duvall just phones in a kindler and gentler "The Great Santini." Farrell can be funny as shit. We saw it on SNL last night, we saw it in ANCHORMAN. This, however, was no ANCHORMAN.
FRIEND: Well, glad I can skip it.
ME: yeah, you should be. I think the BAD NEWS BEARS remake will be better. At least the jokes seem a bit more clever and edgy.I was glad that somebody was enjoying KICKING AND SCREAMING. I just wish that somebody had been me.
