Castle, The

"No special effects, no star power, just a top bloody movie."
5 stars

The Castle is the little Aussie battler about the little Aussie battler.

Daryl Kerrigan (Caton) is a greyhound-loving truckie. His family comes first, his home second. He loves giving compliments, and his wife and 4 children love him all the more for it.
His wife, Sal (Anne Tenney) can cook rissoles and scoop out ice cream, which is just the way Daryl likes it.
Wayne, his eldest son, is in jail "because he fell in with the wrong crowd, that's all."
The next son in line, Steve, is an "ideas man." He has ideas.
Daryl's youngest son, Dale, is that perfectly innocent young dope. He may be one of the dumbest characters you've ever seen, but that makes him so much more likeable.
Then there's Tracey, Daryl's daughter, and it's no secret that this qualified hairdresser is the apple of his eye.
They all live on Highview Crescent, Coolaroo, a house situated behind the airport and directly under the plane's line of flight. They aren't at all wealthy, but the richness of the relationship between them all makes them one of the happiest families around. Life for the Kerrigan family is just the way we all wish it could be for ourselves.
One day, though, a hot-shot company decides they want to extend the airport, which means the Kerrigan's home (their Castle) is to be compulsorily acquired.
In comes incompetent lawyer Dennis Denuto (Tiriel Mora). In fighting for justice for the Kerrigan's, he turns the battle into a full-on war, with gates being stolen and guns drawn. But after fighting the case all the way to the supreme court, justice still hasn't prevailed. It all seems over for this close little family, but there is a surprise just around the corner.
Yes, this film is as simple as they come. It is no Star Wars, nor is it an Austin Powers. Director Rob Sitch has simply set out to create a neat, funny little story which shows that sometimes the good guys do win. He succeeds in every which way imaginable.
I'll make a prediction. If the Academy has the guts to recognise true quality in all types of performances, Michael Caton should walk away with an Oscar next year, as should Bud Tingwell, as Lawrie Hammil, QC. Rather than just acknowledging Hollywood actors doing roles as retards, lets hope that this little Aussie battler of a film delivers a knock out blow to the Academy.

The simple things in life are often the best.
