Final Destination 3

"Deathly Dull."
2 stars

I would firmly argue that the first 'Final Destination' is one of the best horror films of the last ten years - scary, freaky and utterly unique. The sequel was a decent follow up that may have been better off as a DTV sequel, but did the job of entertaining in a gruesome way reasonably well. The third however, shows that laziness has set in and even Death himself is struggling to find new and creative ways of dispatching annoying teenagers.

We all know the score about why Death gets pissed off in these films. He marks certain people for the afterlife in a particularly violent accident, only for someone to have a psychic vision of their fate, leading to their escape along with their friends. Death then gets vengeful and tracks them down one by one, offing them in increasingly grizzly ways. First time round, it was a plane explosion, the second time a motorway pile-up. This time, it's a rollercoaster accident and it's Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who manages to get her friends off the ride, after having a vision of the carnage about to ensue. Death then begins its stalking, with Wendy claiming that she can tell who will be next to go by clues left on photos of her friends she was taking just before the ride started.

You can criticise 'Final Destination 3' for a lot of things, and arguably they're aspects that maybe don't matter that much for a film of this intent or genre. Yes, it's in extreme bad taste to show a picture of the Twin Towers with a shadow of a plane over it to help the claim that photos can reveal the foreshadowing of Death. And yes, it also has gaping gaps of logic - the man who ultimately causes the deaths on the ride, is one of the people that Wendy gets removed from the rollercoaster. And why do the police never take an interest in the spate of bizarre deaths considering that the same person is on the scene every time? These are forgiveable, but what isn't is that there is no ounce of creativity or a trace of surprise left in the franchise.

Whereas the first had a genuine sense of surprise, in that it constantly caught you off guard as to who would die next and when, the third has none of that. Instead, it's just a rote and tired procession of killing off the rest of the characters, with no real surprises up its sleeve at all. Every time the film returns to a character, there's no question as to whether they'll die this time or survive, they are wiped out within a few minutes of their reintroduction, and the film becomes a predictable trot to its conclusion. And while the first film had a good bunch of characters that managed to work up some sympathy, it's a faceless bunch of stereotypes here - Paris Hilton wannabes, a goth, a fitness fanatic who's needlessly aggressive to everyone.

What's worse is that the creative deaths that the first, and most of the second, so rejoiced in, are missing for a great deal of the film. The editing is such a bad hack job that it's never clear what's going on or how the death is being set up. One death involving a nail gun is particularly effective, as is one in a tanning salon, but the first death doesn't even make clear that it's a survivor from the rollercoaster, while another in a gym literally makes no sense - I have no idea what happened or how. Heck, even the rollercoaster accident is edited into haphazard confusion - and I hate rollercoasters, so the fact that it doesn't scare even me is a sign of how badly this film fails.

The first film is a creepy, ingenious minor masterpiece. The second is trashy, but watchable, fun. The third is barely watchable trash. You know you're in trouble when the most creative thought has gone into how to disguise Tony Todd for his two cameo roles.
