Final Destination 3

by Doug Bentin

"You've seen worse. And better."
3 stars

As far as these things go--and some of you want them to go as far as possible--“Final Destination 3” isn’t too bad. But it is disappointing. After the macabre gallows humor of “FD2,” which I thought was the best charnel comedy since “Return of the Living Dead,” I assumed that the latest flick in the series would continue the established run of grotesque chuckles. And it does, I guess, but only sort of.

The everyplot—a word from television, indicating that a series uses essentially the same story structure for every episode--hasn’t changed. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“Sky High”) stars as Wendy, a graduating high school senior who has a vision of a collapsing roller coaster at her class’s celebratory night at the carnival and refuses to board the ride. Several other kids get off with her and the coaster falls apart with pretty spectacular visuals.

Cue the survivor’s guilt.

Then the kids who bailed with her start dying in horrendous ways and Wendy and fellow-survivor Kevin (Oklahoman Ryan Merriman) figure out that the ones who left the ride will die in the order they were sitting in the cars. They will be last unless they can find some way to break the curse.

It sounds like a catchy “X-Files” episode, which it was originally conceived to be by writers Glen Morgan and James Wong (Wong directed).

Any horrorhead—and this movie is more icky than horrific—will tell you that the fun in this series comes from the outlandish means Death uses to dispatch those whose time is past being up. I liked the first one best. A couple of dim bulb gals, real fashionistas, get themselves locked in tanning tubes, the heat goes up, and, screaming, they turn into flaming human marshmallows. A nice overhead shot of the two tanning tubes, looking like twin coffins, turns via match cut into an overhead shot of two twin coffins.

Of course it’s disgusting and no one should find it funny, but the fact that you grin over it anyway is what is so subversive and liberating about it.

The rest of the deaths strain too hard to be ingenious and lose the element of cock-eyed, humorous depravity of that initial double whammy. Rooting for anyone but Wendy and Kevin to survive is also impossible since the rest of the doomed share no redeeming qualities. It’s all a little like a Bowling Alley of Death—Morgan and Wong set ‘em up just to knock ‘em down.

Kudos to editor Chris Willingham for cutting the action so well, and to the young cast for covering a sometime lack of experience and charisma with a coating of high level hokum. One victim especially, Frankie (Sam Easton) is so appallingly annoying you just wish he could get killed over and over again, like “Final Destination Meets Groundhog Day.”

A more consistent tone from the writers might have elevated this one to minor cult status. As it is, it’ll just be part of a series that could really go downhill quickly in Part Four, if there is one.

“Final Destination 3” is not for the faint of heart or anyone upset by the sight of stage blood.
