Drive Me Crazy

"I liked this movie. Does that make me gay?"
4 stars

For a guy like me who really enjoys inserting the slipper when a crappy film comes my way, there's one thing that really pisses me off. That's when I go to see a movie that I know won't interest me or test me with the sole intention of ripping it to pieces…. And I find it's actually not bad. Drive Me Crazy had all the hallmarks of something I could hate. A teen-driven soundtrack, a TV star, various teenagers in a "high school romance"… gee, could this be anymore Anthony Michael Hall? But it was good. Not complex by any means… but enjoyable. Not disappointing. Even different. Yes, you heard me… different. Why? Lemme try to explain it some.

Firstly, Melissa Joan Hart is kinda neat. She's cute, you'd do nasty things to her given half a chance (yes, even you girls) but she's not dumb. And she has a wonky eye. And she's short. This is all good stuff. Stand her next to Jen Love Hewitt. You got one with fake boobs, six inch heels, perfect hair, surgically enhanced schnozz and all of about 18 IQ points. Then you got little Lissy Hart. She's got that lazy eye rolling about, she's short enough to tie her shoes without bending over, her hairstyle looks like it cost about $4 at JustCuts, but she can act, even improvise, she can do comedy, she can do bitchy (she can do me, though I feel sure she wouldn't) and the little coquette looks to be fully equipped in the smarts department. You can keep your plasti-cleavage, gimme the imperfect smart girl with a sense of humour any day.

And imperfection rules the day, for the other lead Adrian Grenier, has a mono-brow a monkey would shave. This kid is definitely not attractive. In fact, he'd be getting beat up fairly regular at any school I've been to (and check my record, I've been to more than most). But you know what? In there amongst the squishy face and the hedgerow over his eyes is a kid who can act. YES! ANOTHER ONE! A MATCHING PAIR!

Essentially this story is the carbon copy of She's All That (which was a carbon copy of Can't Buy Me Love and an infinite number of other 80's movies) but the leads couldn't be further apart. Freddie Prinze+Rachel Leigh Cook=big chins, little noses, cut bodies and no talent. Adrian Grenier+Lissy Hart=no chins, natural noses, a little body fat here and there, and oodles of screen presence. One is a movie you can relate to, one is a TV show on a really big screen.

So the story goes that two teenage neighbours who used to be friends have gone different paths. One is a social reactionary always onto a cause, the other is the little priss Miss Social Queen. Neither mix until they both get the romantic beatdown from their relative partners and come up with an evil plan to get them jealous. They decide to date one another, at least to pretend, until they get the attention from the ones that they want. Here's a question. What do you think happens next? If you've ever seen a teen flick, you know already. If you don't know, lay the fuck off the glass pipe.

So the storyline stinks. The cast doesn't. And the aforementioned teen soundtrack, despite some tracks that were obvious marketing department suggestions, is decent. How do I know the marketing department was all over it? Well look at the title. Drive Me Crazy. Sound similar to a Britney Spears song? It should, the song ends the movie. However, it has absolutely no relevance to anything in the movie at all. Drive Me Crazy sounds like a flick starring Corey Haim and a red Ferrari. It's nothing remotely similar, but plainly the folks that can make these decisions figured they'd spring an extra few million box office by drawing on the Britney fans.

But we can ignore that. This flick is decent. A teen flick starring kids with imperfections who can act their way out of a paper bag. It's a phenomonon we haven't seen since the days of Ringwald. These are kids you can relate to! Okay, so the story they're telling has been done (sloppily) more times than Divine Brown, but I'm enjoying watching. How could this have happened? Who was the visionary that took this lowbrow story and salvaged something watchable from it?

Why, it was John Schultz, director of the underseen and underappreciated band-on-the-road comedy Bandwagon and definitely one to watch. This cat never uses pretty-faces. He likes the greasy kids.

Why should this matter? Well, the idea behind seeing a film is to be taken somewhere that - a) you've never been - b) you wouldn't want to be in reality but are quite willing to go to in fantasy - or c) you've been to a lot but never quite looked at in this way before. Schultz likes to make movies about people you know and it means he's not going to make any blockbusters anytime soon. Hollywood makes amusement park rides. Schultz makes home movies.

I like home movies. I like John Schultz movies. I liked Drive Me Crazy. Sue me.
