"Spoof movie makes cynical critic laugh. Hell freezes over. Details at 11."
Funny. Bloody funny. Really bloody funny. That's Scary Movie from start to finish. This review almost never existed. Confronted with the option of watching a rerun of The Games on Channel 2 or going out to see a spoof of American teen slasher films, the ABC nearly won the fight. I mean, The Games is funny! Surely Scary Movie couldn't be. The word 'spoof' fills me with fear and loathing, images of Leslie Neilsen in his boxer shorts fighting Saddam Hussein, memories of awful films like Plump Fiction or Hot Shots, there hasn't been a good spoof since Flying High, god damn it. But hark! Check it! Scary Movie is frickin' hilarious! It's disgusting! It's insane! It's a must-see!The Wayans Brothers are the guys most likely to succeed in comedy who never really have. It was over ten years ago they created TV's In Living Colour, the last series Jim Carrey did on TV before he became a Hollywood comedy God. The Wayans' are funny guys, but with films like Blankman, Celtic Pride and Major Payne behind them, you'd never know it. Here they've found some prime satirical targets and, granted, some of this is easy comedy. But mixed in amongst it is some truly inspired scenes, some laughs that come from down deep and stay for days, and some of the most disgusting imagery seen since you caught your grandmother having sex with that lawyer n '93.
It's a shame that the distributors of Scary Movie haven't seen fit to give it a bigger push because, frankly, this is a quality comedy that deserves a big audience. It hits all the right marks and, though some material falls short of the desired laugh-volume-quotient, that's always to be expected with this kind of film. It's not Shakespeare, it's hilarious. Go see it ASAP and laugh yourself stupid.
