Planet of the Apes (2001)
[] Buy posters from this movie
by Stephen Groenewegen

2 stars

Planet of the Apes is a waste of time and money for everyone involved (including the audience), but it offers some compensations.

The opening sequences are a teaser for what a Tim Burton movie, set largely in space, might be like (it would certainly look good). Planet of the Apes gets off to a thrilling start with the spectacular crash of Leo Davidson's (Mark Wahlberg) spacecraft in the jungles of the ape-world. Cinematographer Philippe Rousselot's jungle has a menacing, gloomy atmosphere. When the ape army executes a swift and brutal rout of some fleeing humans, this Planet of the Apes remake looks set to emulate the primitive appeal of Franklin J Schaffner's 1968 version (where humans as a species were constantly enslaved and under threat).

Helena Bonham Carter as Ari, the ape most sympathetic to humans, gives a creditable performance. She balances humour with seriousness of intent, and has fun with her ridiculous role without resorting to hammy acting. Rick Baker's ape makeup is generally impressive, as is the research that's gone into mimicking the characteristics of different apes (gorillas versus chimpanzees versus orang-utans, for example). The 1968 film was notable for its shock ending, and Burton and his screenwriters provide a matching finale (a shame that it makes no sense in the context of what's gone before).

There is nothing else to recommend about this film. The retrograde script was strung together by William Broyles Jr (who penned the Tom Hanks Cast Away), Lawrence Konner and Mark D Rosenthal. The few women in the film are defined by their relations to men - at least "Ari" was a scientist in the 1968 movie (Kim Hunter's Dr Zira); here, she's a politician's daughter, fawned over by the one-dimensional villain, General Thade (Tim Roth, who gives an eye-rolling performance). Why would the most virulently anti-human ape be attracted to the most outspokenly pro-human ape? The script's chief innovation (I couldn't get hold of Pierre Boulle's original novel, on which the film is loosely based, to confirm this was new) is the pre-crash sequences demonstrating how humans in 2029 frequently employ chimps in space flight.

Perhaps Boulle also deserves blame, but the ape society in the film is very thinly sketched. The source of the apes' religious system and beliefs can be described in a handful of lines of dialogue. Anything from the 1968 film that could slow the action down has been thrown out. The human slaves all speak English (they mostly couldn't speak at all before, which emphasised the ape/human reversal), the apes have little conception of science and Davidson lands without companions (seeing one of them brutally lobotomised, as occurs in the 1968 film, may have threatened the teen-friendly censorship rating). I couldn't believe some of the old-fashioned tactics cynically resorted to by the writers - young children in danger, an hilariously inept teenager, and three (count 'em!) father figures who are sacrificed to provide motivation for younger characters (Thade's father, played by Charlton Heston, has a particularly ludicrous death scene).

Mark Wahlberg, whose easy charisma made him an appealing presence in The Perfect Storm has nothing to work with here, and proves a bland and humourless hero. Are we really expected to care about the angst of a young, white, non-thinking American military hero, whose bloody-mindedness single-handedly created the situation in the first place?

Burton talked about "re-imagining" the 1968 film (which suggests that he wasn't much interested in Boulle's original novel), but most disappointing is how ugly the film is. The rocky landscapes aren't nearly as eerie or stark as those of Leon Shamroy's (Schaffner's cinematographer). The climax is literally hard to watch because continuous sparking hurts the eyes. Burton's idea of "re-imagining" appears to have been adding a climactic battle between hundreds of apes and humans.

The 1968 Planet of the Apes spawned endless movie and television sequels. Here's hoping history doesn't repeat.
