Get Carter (2000)

"What the hell is wrong with action movies these days?"
2 stars

I remember when action films had-I dunno-action. And I mean real action not bright lights, close ups and SHAKYCAM. And I remember when they had decent stories, not pointless storylines cobbled together for a vain attempt at making sense. And I remember when Stallone looked in slightly better shape than my Dad after Thanksgiving Dinner.

Get Carter is the kind of action film I am sick of seeing Hollywood make. What these asswipe producers do is pick a popular actor, throw him in a shitty story. Save money on action sequences and invest in SHAKYCAM. Then hire a group of top notch advertisers to create a kickass trailers and assfuck people into the theatres to see this shit.
Get Carter looked to be cool to start. In fact, the best part of the film is right at the beginning. We see a Reservoir Dogs-style interrogation scene, and the film opens with a truly badass quote and actually made me shout "YEA STALLONE". Alas, after those five minutes, GET CARTER runs out of story and starts making one up as it goes. The problem with a crappy storyline in films like these is that screenwriters won't just admit the script sucks, they try to touch it up with multiple storylines which don't make sense, and throw in a controversial theme to make the film important. The theme here is statutory rape. It's so blatant, with no setup beside Rachel Leigh Cook's subdued peformance (the best thing in the movie), and its only purpose is to reinforce that another character is an asshole, though anyone paying the slightest bit of attention will know he's an asshole. As I left the theatre I heard people saying this film is confusing, and probably needs to be seen twice to be understood. I HATE THAT. The film was confusing, but only because the screenwriters became lazy and threw shit in for no reason. The story seems to have started right from scratch before our eyes.
Another aspect of this film that blows is the direction. The high powered camerawork is cool-for the first three minutes and through the opening credits. After that it gets irritating. Why must Hollywood execs cut corners and throw action sequences at us which seem like illusions, like we are moving and the film is standing still and just jumping up and down. Watch the car chase halfway through the film and you will get what I am saying. And the film's director Stephen Kay-WHAT IS THIS GUY ON ACID? He throws so much weird shit at the audience, half the time we don't know what we're looking at. At one point we see a car, and then the whole camera shifts upside down (YEAH) for no reason at all. The few action sequences in this film don't even seem like action sequences, just mindless wandering from stallone and some drones. This is the time for KAY to shine, but he chickens out and leaves each action sequence just floating like a lump of shit in the toilet.
The final, and most agonizing major annoyance with this film is STALLONE. It's quite clear, he aint the hero he once was. Rocky and Rambo he was, now he's just some fat guy with a bad haircut and goatee and the personality of bag of fertilizer. He plays the role so blandly, (though much of the fault should go to the screenwriters who give him no basis for character) he just wanders aimlessly like an encino man, a caveman suddenly released in modern society. I almost felt bad for Stallone trying to salvage his once awesome career with shit like this, but then I remember the fat paycheck he is getting and I just blame him for selling out.

This is a pretty piss poor film. The only bright spot if Rachel Leigh Cook and I was happy every time she was onscreen because she actually knew what she was doing. It's just a shame no one else did. I understand this film was based on a novel, I wonder if the book gave its reader as big a headache.
