"What Lurks at Outpost 31?"
5 stars

Sadly, director John Carpenter may be a joke these days, even to some of his hard-core fans. But there's a reason he has so many of those fans to begin with, and it's because of films like his 1982 masterpiece THE THING. Twenty years later, THE THING has withstood the test of time and is still one of the greatest sci-fi/horror films ever made.

There are so many reasons why The Thing works. First, you've got Carpenter at the top of his game. When he's bad, he sucks, and unfortunately he's sucked a lot lately. But when he's good, you get movies like this one. Of the many fine films in Carpenter’s earlier repertoire, The Thing is arguably his best work.

One of the strongest elements of the story is its remote, dark, windy, snowy locale. The film's fictional base camp, "Outpost 31", is a dreary little village indeed. The only thing worse than being in the middle of nowhere is being unable to get out due to the impossible weather. The atmosphere is so violent that characters can get lost even moving between buildings within the camp itself. It's the perfect table setting for an all-you-can-eat horror buffet.

Now take a dozen snowbound and surly guys and throw them into the mix. Here's where Carpenter's excellent casting choices really paid off with a great ensemble. Kurt Russell plays "RJ Macready", sarcastic chopper pilot and reluctant leader. Keith David is "Childs", pissed-off brother, all around badass, and Macready’s sometime-ally when he's not making a play for the top spot. Wilford Brimley is "Blair", the creepy Doctor who acts like an alien even when he's not, and has a penchant for Quaker Oatmeal (okay, I just made that last part up). The rest of the cast, including Richard Dysart, T.K. Carter, and Richard Masur, is equally worthy, and the claustrophobic group becomes the perfect petri dish in which to create an environment of fear, paranoia, and betrayal.

As if all that weren't enough, throw in an alien creature that can absorb any one of your team mates and assume their identity, and can only be killed by fire, and you've got yourself one kick-ass action/suspense/horror extravaganza! While half of the crew becomes Thing-fodder, the other half is left to wonder "Who do you trust, and who do you torch?" Not only is The Thing not for the faint of heart, but those of a weak stomach need not apply for this cinematic bucket brigade of blood and gore.

Drive-In Triple Feature Blood-Splattered Parasite Picks for The Thing:

Alien: One of the first, still the best. Having a creature with acid blood ripping out of a guy's chest took the horror genre up to a whole new level. A worthy predecessor to The Thing, with many similar elements.

The Hidden: Those alien parasites are at it again, although they seem to prefer sunnier locales in this one. In 1980’s Los Angeles, a nasty alien tapeworm takes over everyday people and turns them into violent, bullet-resistant criminals.

When it was released in 1982, The Thing was not exactly embraced by the public, since the cute and kid-friendly E.T. was a much bigger draw. I guess that most people would rather spend time with cuddly suburban aliens than nasty snowbound ones that tear into your flesh and steal your identity – go figure. However, despite the fact that The Thing went on to a huge cult status, Hollywood has not seen fit to churn out a sequel. This is probably a good thing, considering Hollywood’s penchant for turning a great movie into a shitty franchise. However, just in time for the movie’s 20th anniversary, a sequel to The Thing has arrived in video game form. Though the results are mixed, the overall experience should please the average fan.

The Story : It’s pretty basic. You play a character named “Blake”, a commando squad leader sent in to investigate the aftermath of what happened in the movie. You start off in the wreckage of Outpost 31, and must follow the clues from level to level, revealing a government conspiracy to use the Thing virus as a biological weapon, as in Aliens or Resident Evil. The story itself isn’t all that creative, and while it does answer the question of “Whatever happened to Macready and Childs?”, the answer can be considered apocryphal at best.

The Gameplay : For the most part, it’s your standard “Shoot-em-up while finding keys or switches to locked rooms” scenario. Nothing particularly groundbreaking in that respect, but still plenty of fun. There are two basic types of Thing monsters – the small spider-legged “scuttlers” and the big, lumbering “walkers”. Scuttlers can be killed with gunfire alone, but walkers are tougher and will have to be softened up with bullets before being dispatched with a flame weapon. The combat in third person is pretty easy to use, with targeting reticles automatically appearing over nearby enemies.

There are some cool innovations, however, like the addition of Non Player Character team members who you can command, and who will assist you in combat. Engineers can fix damaged equipment for you, and medics can heal you between firefights. Each NPC has a distinct name, face, and personality. They will often toss out sarcastic remarks like “This mission is bullshit, man!” or, when the medic heals you, “Here you go, ya big pansy.” However, the NPC’s are not always friendly or trustworthy. You will often be required to win their trust by giving them weapons, and if they see too much blood and gore they may start vomiting or even lose it and go suicidal. Keeping team members alive and happy can be fairly challenging. Oh, and don’t forget – they can turn into a Thing at any time, and often do.

Also, the game environments are nicely rendered with realistic lighting and weather effects. Prolonged outdoor exposure will reduce health (in other words, you freeze to death), and finding shelter for you and your team is always paramount. There is a first-person viewing and target mode, a variety of firearm and grenade weapons, and a lot of nice little touches that will please the film’s fans. Unfortunately, it’s not all gravy.

On the downside, the controls can be a pain in the ass. The PC version probably has a wider variety of control customization options, but in the console version, there are only three control pad schemes, and all of them suck for one reason or another. While they don’t inhibit basic combat or movement, things like aiming the sniper rifle can be particularly cumbersome, as well as selecting items and issuing commands to team members. Although there is plenty of ammo, save points and health are poorly distributed. They are plentiful in the beginning, but during the later, more crucial missions they can be scarce or non-existent. The inability to save a game at the end or beginning of a level is particularly annoying, and often kept me up playing later than I wanted to so I could find the next goddamn save point. It becomes really infuriating in the last few levels, where the path between save points is long and grueling, and first aid kits are in rare supply. Get ready to spend half of your time dying and reloading. This almost feels like a cop out, because even with having to replay the final few levels ad-nauseum before being able to beat the game, it still felt too short. The overly difficult final levels seem like a developer’s ploy to squeeze more length out of the game.

Final Thoughts – Sometimes irritating, but overall fun, The Thing game is a good, though not perfect, follow up to the film, and even a good stand-alone survival horror game for non-fans. Running around the arctic wasteland and melting Things into puddles of goo rarely gets old, and interaction with the NPC’s is often entertaining. However, there isn’t a lot of replay value, and after the frustration of the final levels you probably won't want to play through it again anytime soon. Probably not worth buying new unless you’re a hard-core fan (more hard-core than me, that is), but worth it at bargain bin prices, and a rock-solid rental. **** - (worth a look)

THE THING has remained unsullied thus far by shoddy sequels or crappy remakes, and hopefully it will stay that way. While there are the occasional rumors of Carpenter wanting to do a sequel, he will be hard-pressed these days to match his own brilliance of twenty years ago.
