"A Meandering Mini-Classic"
4 stars

Wants nothing more to please, and it delivers in this modest aim.

The National Lampoon-inspired slobs-versus-snobs comedy Caddyshack is best described as "ramshackle" in that it's wildly uneven and disjointed, indicative of a screenplay direly devoid of both focus and structure. Three writers are credited, with the debuting director, Harold Ramis, one of them; and what's presented here is more a patchwork than something even remotely organically sound - it's a series of skits more or less, which shouldn't be surprising being that Ramis and stars Chevy Chase and Bill Murray are veterans of the late-night show Saturday Night Live. Yet, flaws and all, the movie is highly enjoyable stuff and manages to overcome its shortcomings. If you want to laugh, then Caddyshack does the job, but don't expect anything of artistic mastery. The story is set at a posh country club called Bushwood, with Chase on hand as eccentric Zen-mindset golf ace Ty Webb who refuses to keep score when he plays and comes from family money - he's so detached from business dealings handled by his accountants he doesn't even know the actual locations of the lumberyards he owns. Chase was broad on SNL, but here's he's agreeably laid-back and sly; he nattily underplays for once, and his assured line readings with power of inflection and phrase are a joy to take in. Diametric to him is Murray, who plays the sloven assistant groundskeeper Carl Speckler determined to rid the golf course of a gopher that's tearing the green up; the very opposite of svelte, Murray is certifiably goofy from the word go, especially when Carl is forever muttering to himself being the quintessential loner he is - he operates on a kind of weird wavelength not even martians could lock onto. (When Chase and Murray finally share a scene it's oddly touching in that Ty never places himself above someone of the lower class, and Carl has no compunctions over calling out someone of the higher echelon on his recent odd behavior.) Rounding out the main characters are the game Ted Knight as the temperamental martinet Judge Snails, the general manager of the club (Knight is a virtuoso of the slow burn, and his outbursts are riotous), and the stand-up comedian Rodney Dangerfield as uncouth real-estate tycoon Al Czervik, a guest of the club who wreaks merciless havoc on it with his boorish behavior and abusive put-downs of the uptight members ("I swear, I never saw dead people smoke before," he remarks seeing them dance on the banquet floor). Of these performers, Dangerfield is far and away the standout - he's so vivid and ingratiating and uproarious you wish the entire proceedings had revolved around him. Unfortunately, what there is of a plot involves high-school senior Danny Noonan, a caddy who aspires to win the club's college scholarship to appease his demanding father; Michael O'Keefe is good enough in the role, but you care very little about Danny's plight, and the movie pretty much chucks the character aside at a moment's notice. (Also unfairly neglected are the luscious Cindy Morgan's sunnily endearing sexpot Lacey Underall and the vibrant Scott Colomby's pathetically machismo-fueled Noonan-rival Tony D'Annunzio.) But Caddyshack is oftentimes explosively funny (Dangerfield's one-liners detonate like atomic bombs), and it rouses itself for a satisfying finale that's staged with actual deft timing. To fully appreciate what Ramis and company have to offer here one needs only to sublimate any semblances of contextual solidity and be receptive to inspired "moments" that have been earmarked to carry the show. The picture may not be a hole-in-one yet darned if it doesn't score at least a few dead-on birdies.

(see my review of its unfortunate sequel)
