"Why would anyone want to win back a French boyfriend? Eew."
2 stars

Might as well face it, This movie sucks.

It's an all too rare occasion where Meg Ryan gets cast against type. Normally, she's the sweet, all-American girl. She's cute with that sort of elfin smile she's got going. But this movie made her into a leather-wearing, motorcycle-riding would-be bad girl. It almost worked.

Meg and Matthew Broderick's ex's (exes?) have left them and shacked up together. Ferris starts spying on his former girl (Kelly Preston) when Meg shows up looking for her (even though he's French) former boyfriend (Tcheky Karyo, playing the uneviable role of the Frenchie). They get into cahoots together, setting up an elaborate camera system that gets projected onto the wall of their loft to spy on their old lovers and plot revenge. Naturally, they fall for each other. It wouldn't be a romantic comedy otherwise.

The problem is, Broderick and Ryan don't have very much chemistry together. He's become too wooden as he's gotten older. He doesn't seem to be having the same amount of fun that he did in the roles of his youth, and that's a shame. I was a big fan of Broderick when I was growing up, especially with Ferris Bueller's Day Off and WarGames. But those days, obviously, are long gone. He's sort of a serious actor, and that's an audience's loss. Ryan just isn't quirky enough for this kind of role. She's just too wholesome. It's inspired casting, but it just doesn't work. Further, you question why anyone would want to go to such great lengths to win back an old love when the characters are so obviously implied to be the kind of people that would simply leave you again. Logic doesn't seem to play a role in Broderick and Ryan's thinking.

While this movie about stalking beat There's Something About Mary into theaters by a full year, there's little comparison between the two. Griffin Dunne's direction is lifeless and uninspired, and the only reason this movie is titled the way it is was to capitalize on the recognition of Robert Palmer's song so it could be used in the trailer.

Maybe a rental. But only if it's cheap.
