"A weekend of sex, drugs and thumping hardcore. Safe!"
3 stars

The easy comparison would be Dazed And Confused, but it's not. See, Dazed And Confused was about the last day of school in Anywheresville, USA. It was a slice of the 70s, with a range of characters, who, despite being off their tits on drugs and booze, are concerned by the future and their role in the world. Human Traffic is about a weekend in Cardiff, where a range of characters get off their tits on drugs and booze... and that's more or less it. So think instead, Diet Trainspotting.

It's Friday afternoon in Cardiff (which is in Wales), and a group of friends, headed up by Jip (John Simm, seen lots of him on UK TV), are wasting their time in their dead-end jobs and watching the clock for the weekend. In the intervening hours before they head off to the club, we learn that this close-knit posse of party-beasts is not without its problems. They're all totally paranoid, for a start. Take Jip, who's suffering from sexual problems (a case of the droops, poor dear), Jip's best mate Koop (dreadlocked Danny Dyer) who's insanely jealous of his girlfriend Nina (Nicola Reynolds). Then there's love interest Lulu (the averagely foxy Lorraine Pilkington) who's just dumped her tool of a boyfriend and doesn't feel up to going out (the horror!), Nina's brother who is embarking on a journey of discovery and rounding up the cast is Lee (Dean Davies) who's seriously, seriously messed up.

The movie jumps around a lot, between real life and comic sketches of a decidely hit-or-miss nature - although some of the hits are trluy hilarious. Take for example the imagined reporter, describing how drugs are distributed in the club, using street lingo in a very posh BBC accent, before annoucing that he's "safe as fuck" and losing it to the pumping music. The cream of the crop is a cameo appearance by Howard Marks, in a hilarious dissection of spliff politics. Marks has become an underground legend for being Britain's biggest and most notorious pot-smuggler - his autobiography, Mr. Nice, is a film waiting to happen in its own right, and this reviewer STRONGLY urges you to track down a copy as soon as is humanly possible.

This is an entertaining 2 hours that, for me, doesn't really have much to say and doesn't really go anywhere. But that's actually a good thing. Oddly, that's my lifestyle up there on the screen, my peer group and my friends and underneath all the good times and the bullshit, it doesn't really have much to say and isn't going anywhere either. I can't decide whether it's because the movie is so skillfully observed or that it's a coincidence, but it's certainly right on the money at the end of the day.
