"Sugar is sweet until you eat the whole box full."

Fluffy. Fluffy as hell. Fair, but fluffy. Funny, but fluffy. Did I mention this is fluffy? When the piano score starts to play, you're inundated with fluff. When the tears flow, fluff. When the animals roll out and do the old touching you through the glass "I'm with ya in your times of trouble, human" thing, fluff city. But hey, it's got Minnie Driver. We like Minnie.

Return To Me is the kind of film you really try to like, but just can't go on forgiving forever. When Robin Williams appears in a film where everything is okay when the piano starts playing, we pillory him. When Meg ryan and Tom Hanks appear in Ephron-penned romances where we know what's going to happen half an hour in advance, we spew. So in Return To Me, when an architect loses his zookeeper wife in an accident and another character has been introduced who needs a heart transplant, then these two later meet up, you just know they're going to fall for one another and eventually figure out a conncetion. Okay, that could be a spoiler, but if you couldn't figure it out yourself, you need help with your alphabet.

What makes this one harder to deal with is the vapidity of how it gets where it's going. The dog is depressed when mommy won't come home, but when Minnie comes over, he's happy! The monkeys are depressed when their keeper disappears, but when Minnie comes over, they happy! And when Dave comes over he feels a sudden heart fluttering whenever Minnie is near. Come on, David. Put two and two together for God's sake.

On the upside, the cast is goooooood. Minnie, despite clearly realising too late that her character is wriiten terribly, gives enough of her infectious personality to keep on top of things. Duchovny, despite some truly awful movie performances in garbage like Playing God, gets his excrement together and gives a heartfelt, if at times one dimensional performance. But the real stars are Minnie's granddad and his friends, played by veterans Carroll O'Connor, Robert Loggia, amongst others. James Belushi is also a stand-out, and it's about time he saw some screen time that didn't involve a remote control. That's the true heart of this film, and where it manages to get into your head in a positive way. I even, at one point, liked the film, depsite it's inherent problems. This line-up could have pulled a well-constructed romance into award territory, but sadly, this isn't a well-constructed romance. It's hokey. It's cloying. And by the end you just want Minnie to go find someone else.

Make a mental note: Movies involving heart transplants, monkeys and romance = bad people.
