Held Up. Jamie Foxx gets stranded at the Zip & Sip in a lowly populated area in Nevada after his PMSing girlfriend leaves him and his car (which prompted their split) is stolen. Add to matters that a trio of amateur banditos stick up the Zip & Sip, Foxx and several others are held hostage while the town’s small populous comes out for a day’s excitement. Director Steve Rash thinks he can’t be held accountable for the lackluster outcome and relevance of this movie because absolutely nothing is taken with even a grain of seriousness, and while that means that Held Up is fully innocuous and even partially jovial, the whole thing is as full of mass as a fully blown balloon. A unique concept occurred to me during the movie, that this was the complete opposite version to Deterrence, whose seriousness gave Rod Lurie all the credibility he could want. It’s all day-and-night. However, Foxx is the master of his skill, and his room for entertainment in these barren circumstances at least fills the balloon with helium.

With Nia Long, Barry Corbin, Sarah Paulson, Eduardo Vañez and Jake Busey.

Final Verdict: C.
