"Amusing redub from Woody Allen."
4 stars (Worth A Look)

As Woody Allen explains in the prologue, he was asked to deliver the definitive spy film, full of the usual 'raping, looting, and intrigue' (or so he says, anyway).

What Woody wound up doing was finding a 1964 Japanese spy thriller (Kagi no Kag) and giving it the Woody Allen treatment, i.e. re-editing it and dubbing it with American actors. The result is an off-the-wall comedy, something of a precursor to Airplane, with lots of hilarious throwaway lines ("Don't tell me what to do or I'll have my mustache eat your beard") and music by the Lovin' Spoonful. Tatsuya Mihashi is the libidinous hero, renamed Phil Moscowitz; Mie Hama (who went on to become the first Asian Bond girl) is Terri Yaki. The plot, for those who care, centers on a precious egg-salad recipe.

Allen and his cowriters, including Louise Lasser, also did the voices.
