Tourist Trap
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Brian McKay

"As with the average tourist trap, you'd be better off to just keep driving."
2 stars

TOURIST TRAP sports all the trappings of a bad 70's horror film - because that's exactly what it is. This whacked-out tale of a lonely roadside wax museum curator (Chuck Connors), and the five kids who make the mistake of breaking down at his front door, has a few amusing moments and one or two creepy touches, but what should be a trip into the macabre is just a brief roadside excursion into silliness.

If TOURIST TRAP has a saving grace, it would be its over the top performance by Chuck Connors (who I grew up watching in the role of one of Television's all-time bad-asses: The Rifleman). Chuck plays the lonely and creepy owner of a now-defunct roadside wax museum. Okay, Tonya Roberts looks pretty good in Daisy Dukes and a boob tube, so I guess that's two saving graces.

Connors is amusing in the role of Mr. Slauson, as well as Mr. Slauson's crazy twin brother (or is he?) who has a house full of mannequins, unexplained telekinetic abilities, and the power to turn humans into floor displays. Oh, and he also likes to wear a blonde wig, talk like Harvey Firestein, and parade around in a mannequin mask. This is what became of The Rifleman? The Horror.

Sadly, the downward spiral of Connors' career that the film is indicative of is about the most horrifying thing it has to offer. Oh sure, it's got a house full of creepy-looking mannequins, which is a good start. But the plot is so completely predictable, meandering, and borderline retarded that it sucks all of the potential for genuinely creepy atmospherics right out of the airlock. A dark room full of mannequins looks creepy enough, but when all they really do is unhinge their jaws and go "Aaaaaaaaah!", or sing in tune with the film's incredibly cheesy score - well, that's not scary, it's just silly. A better example of the "scary mannequin" film can be found in the 1987 movie Dolls, which is also rather silly but has several moments that are genuinely creepy, and handles the humorous aspects of the story more adeptly so as to not make it excessively campy.

I suppose in the end TOURIST TRAP lives up to its namesake - it's a way to kill some time, but not a particularly exciting one. Unless you have a severe phobia of mannequins, you'd best be looking for your cheap scares a little further on down the road.
