Saving Grace (2000)

"Watching a movie about a greenhouse full of weed has a Pavlovian effect"
4 stars

Damn, watching this movie made me want to get high. But it also made me laugh quite a bit more than I expected. I was just expecting it to be another "Waking Ned Devine" with chronic, but it turned out a bit better than that.

When the Titular Grace (Brenda Blethyn), a rich housewife and avid gardner, is widowed, she quickly learns that her husband has left her several hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt. If she can't come up with the money quickly, then she will lose the house.

Meanwhile, her gardener/handyman, Matthew, is making a piss-poor effort to grow some weed (hidden behind the local vicarage, of all places) and find a steady job while bickering with his girlfriend Nicky (Valerie Edmond, who has one of the biggest schnozzes I've ever seen).

In a moment of desperation, Matthew asks Grace to take a look at one of his plants and see what's wrong with them. She agrees, knowing full well what it is, to take it back to the greenhouse. As it begins to blossom, she stumbles upon the grand scheme to turn her greenhouse into a full-scale weed cultivation project, thereby making enough money to save her house. Along the way, she gets mixed up with some seedy criminal types and somehow becomes friends with her dead husband's former mistress.

The film is not without it's share of contrivances, and in some instances it grossly overestimates the effects of marijuana so that it can get the cheap laughs. But it is genuinely and consistently funny, and has an endearing cast. It of course also contains the obligatory "Old lady smokes weed, says it isn't doing anything for her, and then is laughing hysterically two minutes later" scene that, while predictable, is pretty hilarious.

The ending is probably where it suffers the worst contrivance. Everything is tidied up just a little too quickly and neatly, but the quality of the rest of the film makes this forgivable. And besides, it's a comedy, so one shouldn't expect to deep or complicated of an ending.

It's not funny in the way "Cheech and Chong" or "Dazed and Confused" are funny, because the humor does not center around the use of pot, so much as the process and consequences of trying to grow and sell it for a good cause. Worth a look when you're in the mood for some light British comedy. And, unlike a Guy Ritchie film, all of the accents are easily understandable.
