Broken Arrow

"Wow. Endangered dirt."
3 stars

An average action movie with an above average director.

Broken Arrow was the second American movie made by Hong Kong director John Woo (the first being Hard Target). It was bigger, and it was better, and it allowed Woo to go on to make an even better film, Face/Off.

That said, Broken Arrow just isn't very good.

John Travolta and Christian Slater play Air Force pilots. John's the bad guy. You can tell because he holds his cigarettes in a really weird way and narrows his eyes a lot. Christian's the good guy, because he's smaller and weaker and John beats him up a the beginning of the movie, telling him he doesn't have "the will to win" (foreshadowing, people, foreshadowing!). The two are taking their stealth bomber out for a test run, complete with a couple of nuclear weapons on board. John starts his master plan by making Christian eject and crashing the plane after dumping the nukes, which he'll have to retrieve with his henchmen. See, John will sell the nukes to some organization who will then blackmail the government. Unless, of course, Christian can stop him, but what are the odds of that?

Well, it IS a Hollywood movie...

Christian teams up with perky park ranger Samantha Mathis (both of them were in Pump Up The Volume, you know) to stop John and his cronies, one of whom is former NFL player and crappy actor Howie Long.

The outcome is never really in doubt.

What's cool about the movie is the totals: a train, part of a mountain, a mineshaft and not one, not two, not three, but FOUR helicopters all get blown up. There's also the usual Woo staples like two-fisted gunplay, face-to-face confrontation and slow-mo action sequences. Slater is serviceable (if he'd just stop squinting), but Travolta's not quite right as the heavy. He'd do better in Face/Off, but here's he's just kind of laughable.

Decent action sequences, but nothing ultra-cool.
