Girl 6

"A film of ideas--BAD ideas."
1 stars

I love Spike Lee, but I could barely bring myself to watch "Girl 6." It's nothing but a big, dumb pile of hokum--a series of scenes thrown randomly together with only the weakest of links holding everything in place. It's a comedy for people who don't want to laugh, a drama for those who don't want to think. It's exactly the opposite of what Spike excels at.

The Spikinator tries on a new style with this one--it's airier than his other films, with ever-shifting film stocks and sets so immaculate they seem space age. With most directors, you'd wonder if perhaps the unique visuals were supposed to distract the audience from the lackluster plot, but Spike Lee is a different case. If he didn't feel the story of a struggling actress-cum-phone sex operator-cum empowered female was worth immortalizing on celluloid, he wouldn't have done so.

So we have a director who believes in what he's doing; that itself would be commendable if the end result weren't so utterly wrongheaded and stupid. Girl 6 might have worked if Spike had stuck with a single approach--at the very most, it would have been moderately entertaining, helped along by a winning performance by Theresa Randle and a veritable assload of star cameos. But no--he can't decide what point he wants to make, and so he throws in any old crap he can think of.

Girl 6 moves along pleasantly for the first 75 minutes or so, and then lurches into an awkward, halfass downward spiral, with a few subplots thrown carelessly into the mix in an effort to make this a deeper, more serious entry. Now, I normally love Spike despite (if not because of) his willful, wild excess, but the tendency to really pour it on is the wrong choice for this type of film.

Stylistic qualms aside, this one still sucks. It's hard to believe Lee actually expects us to feel enlightened by the exploits of a happy sex-worker; does he not realize what degrading work that is? Does he not realize that he himself is objectifying his main character by not giving her a name, forcing us to relate to her only by a false persona created for the purposes of stimulating men? Does he not realize that Prince is past his sexed up prime and the soundtrack fashioned for the film is more annoying than funkadelic?

These questions, and many others, unfortunately go unanswered. "Girl 6" is a big, confusing mess, and it's cinematic crimes are only compounded by the unveiling of Thomas Jefferson Byrd's bare ass.
