American Pie 2 |
by PyThomas
"(Insert 'stale pie' joke here.)"

You knew another American Pie movie was inevitable. The film made loads of money, the gags were the talk of the town, and now when you mention "American Pie" the average teenager or twentysomething will tend to think of Stifler, netcam sex, spooge beer and pie-fucking rather than "The Day The Music Died". Personally I can't help but feel sorry for Don McLean. The gang is all here again after taking a year of college: Jim (Jason Biggs), Oz (Chris Klein), Finch a.k.a. "Shitbrick" (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Stifler (Seann William Scott), Vicky (Tara Reid), Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), Heather (Mena Suvari) and Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth), as well as the usual supporting characters. This time, instead of trying to lose their virginity, the East Great Falls Five are just trying to get through the summer, and have a memorable one at that. (We never exactly learn what that "next step" was that they were toasting at the end of the last movie.) A bust at one of Stifler's parties by the fuzz leads them to seek greener pastures for the summertime. Kevin's brother (Casey Affleck) comes to the rescue again and tells them of a vacation cottage by the lake that he and his pals once partied in. They can't afford the rent by themselves, so they have to hold their noses and include Stifler in the deal as well.
There is no ulterior nookie goal this time around, so we're left with a bunch of subplots that try and meld together on their own with less-than-stellar results. Stifler, in his usual snide fashion, takes over the cottage ("Stifler's House of Love") and stocks the place up with beer and porno videos. Jim gets news that Nadia's coming to visit for the summer, so he sneaks into the infamous "band camp" to try and improve his romance skills with the help of his first sexual partner, Michelle. Oz and Heather are worlds apart, so they try their hand (no pun intended) at phone sex. Kevin and Vicky have broken up, so they're looking for new dates while wanting to avoid the awkwardness of being in the same vicinity of each other. Finch is studying the art of tantric sexuality in the hopes that he might have another tryst with Stifler's mother. And "The Shermanator" (Chris Owen) returns, with dry pants and a renewed quest for poontang.
Credit is due the Weitz guys for putting some new memorable gags in, including Jim's Krazy-Glue mishap and Stifler's... well, let's just say he gets a "golden" opportunity. The "truth-or-dare" moment with the guys and some bisexual girls is at once hilarious and unsettling... basically a role reversal takes place, with the girls wanting to see the guys get it on with each other. And there's a nice little plot twist at the end, as to who ends up sleeping with who.The rest of the time, though, it's just warmed-over "American Pie" leftovers. If you like "Pie 1", you'll find this one just as entertaining. If you've never seen the first movie, you'll probably be left wondering what these guys were trying to accomplish.
