"A great ghost story with a less than satisfying twist."
Classic camp fire horror story. builds well, visually keeps pace with what you'd expect from a ghost story: brooding english manor, fog, children, an insane mother, creepy servants with something to hide and a touch of the macabre. This, however, is not a scary movie. It's a beautiful, gothy movie.
While the story and the tension builds suspense well, it turns flat when it should startle.
I like ghost stories and especially creepy stories about Victorian spiritism and haunted houses but the end, while visually arresting, felt cheap. I wanted something truly bizarre but after The Sixth Sense, The Others was a letdown. It's a shame this film didn't get made first because I probably would have thought it was all very clever. If you go in for all that spooky atmospheric stuff like I do, then this movie is definitely worth seeing but don't be surprisd when you are left scratching your head at the way the story turns out. Even as the story is drifting away, the film itself is still cool to watch.
