"Choose Life. Choose Heroin. Choose FUCKING Whatever."
5 stars

Trainspotting is a landmark film that deals honestly with the causes and effects of heroin addiction and it's inherent lifestyle. But it is MUCH more than that. All the elements mesh seamlessly into a wicked blend of hilarious social commentary, disturbing realism and a healthy dose of the surreal.

Trainspotting is gripping story about a group of friends in Edinburgh, Scotland. It illustrates how everyday decisions alter the courses of their lives...

The movie begins with our central character, Renton, searching for a path of his own. We learn that perhaps all he really wants is to choose to be part of the herd (corporate ladder, board meetings, house in the 'burbs, etc.) Above all else, he wants to be able to choose. Somewhere along the line he has lost that ability. During moments of clarity he realizes that along the course of hanging out and shooting up, he has misplaced his identity.

Renton is a multi-layered character that defies a simple description. He is sometimes malicious and often impulsive, but in a childlike way. Through his narrative we gain insight into a young man struggling to come to terms with his lifestyle and ultimately himself. Ewan McGregor, in the role of "Rent-Boy", is spectacular. It is absolutely impossible for me to imagine anyone else playing this role. This speaks volumes about how truly great his performance his. This role justifiably propelled McGregor into stardom. Unfortunately, the idiots in Hollywood have yet to give him another screenplay he can really sink his teeth into.

Through images of intense violence and creepy surrealism the director, Danny Boyle, takes the viewer along for the ride and insight is gained. He doesn't insult the audience's intelligence by candy-coating Renton's world. He has the balls to linger on horrific, and sometimes disgusting, images and deftly injects several hilarious subplots that provide distraction. In fact, the dialogue is so sharply written and bitingly funny that the whole thing seems funnier than it should be. Ironically, that is precisely the way it SHOULD BE.

The company our anti-hero keeps is a varied lot indeed.

First off is Sick Boy. He survives by putting up a facade to mask his inner turmoil. The fact that the viewer only catches glimpses of his internal struggles makes this character that much more believable.

Then there’s Tommy... At the beginning Tommy seems to be destined for bigger and better things. He is athletic, focused and immensely optimistic. Drugs certainly do not enter into his grand scheme of things.

Next is Spud. He is a character that is at once pitiful and extremely likeable. It becomes painfully evident; from the moment we meet him, that whatever direction his life takes it won't be pretty.

I hesitate to call Begbie a friend at all. He has no concept of friendship. He is brutal and self-absorbed. But when he is not acting out violently, he exudes an odd sort of charisma. He is the poster-child for antisocial behavior. Robert Carlyle is outstanding (as usual) in his role as Begbie. His performance is not to be missed.

Add to the mix a drug-dealer (appropriately nicknamed Mother Superior) and various love interests and it makes for a potent brew indeed.

Trainspotting is not JUST a movie about heroin addiction. It doesn’t attempt to make a statement about the evils of drug use and it is doesn't try to glorify it either. The fact that heroin plays a vital role in the lives of the characters is hardly significant once you peel the onion and discover at the heart of this excellent movie is an unflinching commentary on the human condition in general. You don't have to be on junk to realize that life decisions, such as the company one keeps, can alter your very existence. For better or for worse…

This review is on the Criterion Laserdisc, which contains some deleted scenes (good stuff). There is also an interview with the author of the autobiographical book (I was bored senseless) and the obligatory movie commentary by the director.

A dark, disturbing and brilliant film. Trainspotting tops my list of favorite movies. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
