Ali G Indahouse

"It's jU$T a bittA haRmle$$ FuN - @1Ght?"
4 stars

Ali G will not make you split your sides laughing. Ali G will not impress you with razor sharp dialogue that puts Shakespeare to shame. Ali G will not dazzle you with effects or make you reconsider just what life is all about. But it'll make you laugh, aight?

Ali G is a wannabe homeboy in the English town of Staine. He has a girlfriend (sorry, 'bitch'), a small posse of pals, and he spends his time teaching his 'keeping it real' class at the local leisure centre. But when the leisure center is about to be closed down by the gub'mint, Ali finds himself enlisted as a Minister of Parliament and bringing about world peace by putting dope in the world leaders' tea.

If that sounds like utter silliness to you, take some satisfaction in the fact that the filmmakers agree. Ali G Indahouse is not about anything more than having a laugh, showing how silly it is to pretend to be something you're not, and making dick jokes.

And dick jokes is what this film does very well. Pretty much unreleasable in the US as anything but an NC-17 because of it's constant allusions to homosexual and heterosexual sex (even though it doesn't show anything), it's a shame that Americans are 'protected' from some of the funniest teen humor in some time. Ali G goes a step further than the American Pie standard we're unfortunately used to and then takes a few steps further past even that. When Ali finds his two best buddies locked in the middle of a man-on-man doggy-style soiree (they thought they were going to die so they may as well try it), he asks "well, how was it?" "Not bad actually," says the pitcher. "Quite enjoyable really," says the catcher. When Ali tells them they have to get out because the police are coming to get them, they reply, "Could you just give us a minute to finish up.."

In any country other than the USA that's just funny. In the USA, it's heinous enough to warrant keeping teenagers out and telling adults they can only rent it if they go somewhere other than Blockbuster. Did someone say 'Land of the free'?

Ali G is not for everyone, certainly many of the jokes fall flat and many more repeat on a theme, while the cast really doesn't warrant noting in any way for the future, but at 78 minutes it's just about the right running time before things get boring, and for the healthy dose of laughs and farce, this is certainly far better than many of its ilk.

Well worth hunting down and well worth watching, Ali G Indahouse will make you laugh out loud. And that's far more than Matthew Perry has ever done.
