"Leaving city limits."
1 stars

Inept and humorless remake of Mario Monicelli’s 1958 Italian comedy Big Deal on Madonna Street.

Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo relocate, obviously, to Collinwood, the “Beirut of [New] England,” to crank out the mishaps of a motley crew of would-be petty criminals. The occasional slang is anachronistically tossed in — the Ballini, the Malensky, the Caputznik — causing only minor stir over the rest of the bad choices and how they tend to minimize these. One unsuspecting disappointment is in the casting of William H. Macy, generally reliable, but even with the prop of a slung-up baby, gains no leverage. The excess and overall self-importance of the Russo Brothers should come as no surprise as they have been mentored under the ego-swelling, self-important guru, Steven Soderbergh, with additional hot air wheezing out of George Clooney. No matter how pathetic, out-of-sync, and poorly recycled the gags are, all that strain warrants is but a mere uninspired giggle at the imbecility of plunging down a coal-shoot into who-knows-what.

With Sam Rockwell, Isaiah Washington, Michael Jeter, Patricia Clarkson and Luis Guzman.
