First Wives Club, The

"If I hear Diane Keaton sing 'You Don't Own Me' one more time...."

This is *not* a movie for guys.

Let me stress that. It's *NOT* a movie for guys. It's like, an anti-guy movie. Plus, it's got Kathie Lee Gifford in a cameo role, and if that doesn't make you want to slit your wrists, then nothing can save you anyway.

That said, The First Wives Club tells the story of three women who are past their acting prime who get all jealous that their husbands left them for younger, trophy wives. They get pissed. They decide to get revenge. How do they do it? They start a business.

Yikes. Hell hath no fury like a woman who's a capitalist.

Anyway, they make the lives of their ex's miserable, see the folly of their ways, create a women's shelter, and close with a big musical number. Roll credits.

I guess if the occasional slapstick comedy (without the pain and humor) is your thing, then this is your movie. If you like the (over)acting ability of Bette Midler, this is your movie.

But if you want a movie completely devoid of heart, meaningful performances, and comedy, then this most definitely is your movie.

I'm not slamming this movie because it's anti-men. Honestly. I'm slamming it because it's stupid. If the women hadn't been married to such jerks in the first place, there'd have never been a need in the first place. Had they remained close to a friend who committed suicide (the impetus for the three friends coming together), they probably would have been better people anyway, without turning to alcohol or food or being meek or whatever their vices are supposed to be. The characters are far too broad. Decent actresses such as Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton and even Midler (so great in Beaches) shouldn't be reduced to this.

If you're a guy, and you have any dignity, you won't let your ladyfriend choose this as the Saturday night rental. Trust me.
