Solaris (2002)

"Remaking a film that was boring to begin with... what do you expect?"
2 stars

Steven Soderbergh has cajones like watermelons, baby, but then again, it's easy to have big swingers when you can get Clooney, Pitt and Roberts to come be in a movie with one tap of the speed dial. I don't know whose idea it was to remake Solaris out of Soderbergh and Clooney, but I sure as heck know that there wasn't one moment that either one of them would have fooled themselves that this is a commercial project. Not one. And they were, of course, very right.

Solaris is a Twilight Zone episode, basically. It centers on a psychologist (Clooney) plying his trade a few years in the future, at a time when space travel is fairly commonplace. Said shrink is a little glum, having lost his true love to the Grim Reaper a few years prior, so when the corporate/government head kickers appear at his door and tell him he's needed on a distant exploration station near the planet Solaris, he only makes a minor effort to get out of the gig.

But once there, he finds only two of the folks supposed to be manning the station are actually left alive. One of those (Jeremy Davies) is certifiably mad, and the other (Viola Davis) is very pissed off to be there.

And soon our hero knows why, when his dead wife appears before him as if she's never been gone. Why is Clooney's dead missus standing behind him? Is she alive once more, or is this some kind of weird space hallucination?

Unfortunately, what could have been a really spooky freak out flick ends up becoming a slow remake of a slow original, where long, quiet art shots and romantic flashbacks take the place of suspense and spine chills. I mean, if you were on a space station and suddenly your dead loved ones were alive and lying in bed with you, I'm thinking you'd shit your pants, but that aspect of Solaris is a momentary distraction as Soderbergh aims for genius rather than entertainment.

This honestly must have been a 45 page screenplay because the characters in this film make those in Lost in Translation look like Chris Tucker in comparison. That's okay at times - nothing wrong with a bit of quiet contemplation... unless every minute of the film is spent in quiet contemplation, as it is here.

The production design and effects are ample for what's required for the story, which means they're claustrophobic and simple, with just a hint of future about them. all in all, if more than a million bucks was spent on this film, I'd be very surprised, which is not to say it looks cheap, just that there isn't a whole lot required beyond a three room space station set.

Overall, not exactly a film I could recommend, which is something considering I'm a huge fan of both the director and lead. I'll always give credit to a noble failure over the usual Hollywood projects that never try for anything beyond the age old formula of explosions and soundtrack, but Solaris is something that is far harder to categorize - it's an unoriginal piece of originality. Move on.
