"If you like Carpenter's work you will like this.."
3 stars

Now here's something you dont see everyday.. John Carpenter making a thriller that is underplayed!

This film based on the book 'The Midwitch Cuckoo' (Well actually it's more of a remake of the 50's film of the same name, but I like to drop names!)

The plot is about an unknown force fucking a town's population of women, getting them preggers, and resulting in lots of Nazi-looking kids trying to kill everyone.

The execution of the plot is not done well, so the evolution of the story is an a-b thing, much like the 50's film. But the book was a much more involved story.

Apart from that the film is a joy. The FX are subtle (shadows, lights etc). The music is haunting (A usual and easily recognisable Carpenter piece). The direction is mostly basic but with cool flourishes (Like They Live) and the script is fine as long as you dont demand.

But one thing I must applaud, Christopher Reeve pulling off a GREAT performance... amongst people like Kirstie Alley, he pulls himself from the surrounding bad acting and does more than a decent job.

So to sum up... If you like Carpenters work you will like this, If you want to see a creepy film that is not gory and excessive you will like this. If though you want a intellectual supernatural thriller movie get out The Changeling or The Exorcist 1 & 3
