Payback (1999) |

"Mel plays Mel. I like Mel. I like movie."

Good stuff, but Mel does this kind of action shit in his sleep. Fun, but easy. Like your sister. Are you supposed to resent or dislike a movie just because you've seen it before, with the same actor, five or six times? Are you supposed to resent or dislike a movie because the big movie star wrested control away from the director and re-shot new footage to make the star more "likeable"? Are you supposed to resent or dislike a movie because it had a preview for a REALLY bad-looking Steve Martin movie? If your answer to all these questions is a resounding NO, then Payback is the movie for you.
Mel Gibson is the suicidal cop who...no, wait...he's a Scottish warrior...no, that's not it...he's Mel. The same Mel you see in every movie he's ever in. He's a little more rugged in this one, but he'd still get his ass whupped by Mad Max if they ever met in a fight.
So Mel gets some money stolen from him by his wife and partner, and he sets out to get it back. I really liked Gregg Henry, who played his ex-partner. He was TOUGH. The movie is pretty well cast - it was nice to see John Glover getting work, now that "Brimstone's" been cancelled. Some girl who's apparently in "Ally MacBeal" is also in this movie, and she kicks ALL ass.
So there's punching, kicking, shooting, blowing up, wisecracking, etc, etc, etc. Everything you'd expect from a Mel Gibson movie. I was in the mood for a Mel Gibson flick, so I enjoyed it. Except for the fact that the guy across the aisle from me farted through the ENTIRE movie. Seriously. I was frightened. Really loud, too. It's "Lethal Weapon 5", but it works. Works a whole lot better than "Lethal Weapon 3 & 4", anyway.
