South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut |
by PyThomas
"That movie has warped my fragile little mind!"

In 1995, just as we were beginning to tire of Beavis and Butt-head, along came animation's next big thing: South Park. Well, it wasn't South Park YET, but Trey Parker and Matt Stone's video Christmas card, "The Spirit of Christmas", brought joy and laughter and kung fu fighting to whoever was lucky enough to receive it. The story, Jesus vs. Santa with four potty-mouthed kids providing colorful commentary, was offbeat enough to evoke the hallowed comic genius of Monty Python...complete with cutout animation that seemed to be the bastard son of Terry Gilliam's cartoon dementia.
Once the news came that Comedy Central would spawn a series out of Matt and Trey's creation, and with a mature-audiences-only TV-MA rating, I wondered if the non-premium cable world would be ready for lines like "I don't have to take that kind of shit from a Jew" or "Don't say pigfucker in front of Jesus".
It turned out that Comedy Central still had lofty standards. What few obscenities the four boys - Stan, Kyle, Cartman and the death-prone Kenny - said were bleeped out by the network. I thought TV-MA meant you could get away with anything. Guess not. But now, thanks to the widespread popularity of the "South Park" TV show, we now have a South Park movie, and we get to finally see our favorite animated Colorado town the way Trey and Matt originally wanted us to see it... Bigger, Longer and Uncut.
And a fucking musical to boot.
Here's how the story goes.... The kids sneak into an R-rated film starring their TV idols Terence and Philip. The fart-happy duo get really raunchy on screen, and once the youth start mimicing the vulgar lines from the film, the parents are horrified enough to launch a full scale war on Canada, the origin of the Terence and Philip movie.
Kyle has to endure the humiliation of having his belligerent mother lead the whole anti-Canada crusade. Stan is drawn into a love triangle with Wendy Testaburger and a new arrival to South Park, the smooth and charming Gregory. Cartman becomes an unwilling guinea pig for shock therapy against profanity. Kenny, of course, dies. He still has lots of adventures in the afterlife, however.
Suffice it to say that the majority of the population will be offended in some way by this film. The churchgoing folk may get up in arms over what is said about God. The more extremist Muslims may condemn Matt and Trey for how they treat Saddam Hussein. (I hope the two are taking notes from Salman Rushdie.) The gay community may get pissed off at how devilishly their lifestyle is portrayed. Fans of certain celebrities may not like how their idols are portrayed or killed. The dialogue gets really racy, bordering on NC-17 territory. You will see a real penis on screen, too.
I know what you're thinking... "Get to the point, you long-winded Texan cow-fucker. Is it FUNNY?!?!?" Well, the answer is: Yes. YES. OH FUCK YES. You'll laugh your ass off throughout the film. If you're offended, you'll laugh hard enough to possibly forget what offended you in the first place. The South Park movie will be especially funny to those raised on the influential Monty Python. Hell, even one of their members, Eric Idle, does a cameo here as the scientist who explains the experimental shock-inducing implant that tortures Cartman. So if you think you can stomach it, go see it before it's quite possibly banned in your area. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut is so nasty, raunchy, and riotously funny, it makes Fritz the Cat look like Garfield.
