"Run Manni, Run!"
5 stars

SCREENED AT THE 2003 SEATTLE FILM FESTIVAL: Hordes of film fans eagerly awaited what would happen to the cast of Run Lola Run after that film became a surprise smash in the English speaking world. While female lead Franka Potente jumped into the first big budget scripts sent to her (The Bourne Identity and Blow) and duly dropped off the radar after middling performances and average box office returns, the actor who played opposite her in Lola, Moritz Bleibtreu, opted to remain a big fish in a small pond and keep making films in Germany. After totally enjoying his new Euro-road-trip-rom-com In July, I can safely say Bleibtreuís decision was a great one.

Daniel (Bleibtreu) is a geek. Heís studying to be a teacher, heís struggling to get a date, and he dresses like the host of a childrenís TV show. Luckily for him, heís noticed by local gal Juli (Christiane Paul), who tells him that if he buys a sun-shaped ring from her, heíll find a girl who owns an identical sun motif in the next few days, and she will be Ďthe oneí. Juliís plan is to reveal herself as the owner of the matching pair, but Daniel meets a Turkish girl (Idil Uner) with the same design on a T-shirt and sets himself to follow her across Europe so he can profess his love. However, in a twist of fate, Juli decides that if she canít have Daniel, sheís leaving town and going wherever the first person who stops will take her. And who stops to pick her up on the side of the road? You guessed it: Daniel.

Superbly directed by Faith Akin, In July manages to be every bit as enjoyable as Run Lola Run, even borrowing a little style from that production by infusing upbeat music throughout the film to keep it kicking along. Bleibtreu doesnít miss a beat, but co-lead Christiane Paul gives this film its heart and soul. These two characters are far from perfect, there are no Tom Hanksí and no Meg Ryanís here, and thatís a great thing. As the road trip rolls on and twist of fate after twist of fate befalls this duo, the only thing stopping the movie from getting silly is the undeniable chemistry of the star-crossed romantic pair leading proceedings. Akin manages to keep things on a knife edge somewhere between humor and drama, action and romance, and the end result is a film that audienceís wonít just enjoy - theyíll love the thing.

Itís a travelogue, itís a comedy, itís Romeo and Juliet, itís Run Manni Run, itís a fantastic flick that received a standing ovation from the crowd at the Seattle Film Festival and deserved every second of it. No, In July isnít a film that will be hailed as a masterpiece, but if youíre sick to death of sugary sweet rom-coms that leave you feeling like you need a filling, In July might just bring you back to the genre in a big way.
