Beyond Re-Animator

"It's blood, guts, gore and fun, but what else did you expect?"
4 stars

Ahhh, the cult classic. When you love horror movies as much as I do, then you simply must see Beyond Re-Animator. It has everything a great horror/slasher movie has to have. Yeah, it's silly, but then who cares? This film makes no bones about it. It doesn't go for drama, mystery, or action. Pass the potion please, it's time to have some fun.

Our old buddy Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) has finally gone to prison for his past crimes. All of his gory work had to catch up to him sometime. But does that stop our old buddy from continuing his gruesome experiments? Hell no! And so our movie unfolds.

Witnessing his sister die to a gruesome zombie years ago, Howard (Jason Barry) heads to medical school to get his degree. You see, he doesn't want to be quite so helpless the next time a close family member croaks to the un-dead.

Now 13 years later, Howard begins work at the very prison that our old pal Herbert West is incarcerated in. Coincidence? I think not. Together the two conspire to bring back the dead, this time with an additional procedure to stabilize the re-animation process. Does it work? We'll let you decide for yourself once you see this film.

Keep in mind folks, this movie isn't meant to be good in an academy awards, acting, sort of way. It's meant to be fun, as it should be. If you haven't seen the original Re-Animator then you should prior to picking this one up to own or rent. It will certainly help you with the background as to how this series of films has developed. While you can see this film as a stand alone, it'll take all the fun out of it. The prior films establish the character.

Is this a slasher film? Hell yes! It's got gore, violence, gallons and gallons of blood. Not to mention the gratuitous nudity that all these types of films rely on. The best part is the comedy that you see tossed in all through the film.

Screaming Mad George has done it again with the gory effects. That guy is crazy, but ya gotta love him.

For fans of the series, you won't want to miss Beyond Re-Animator. It's destined to become another cult classic. If you tend to watch horror films for the sheer terror, this isn't the film for you. If you want to have an evening of fun, then grab some friends, turn down the lights and shove this baby in your DVD player.
