"More along the lines of 'Replayer.'"
3 stars

Elementary time-travel yarn about a plucky young girl, rather Björk-ish in resemblance, sent from the future (therefore a “returner”) where a war with robots controlled by aliens is on the brink of total takeover.

She is intended to prevent the discovery of the alien ship that sets into motion said war, but with the employment of a street thug, learns of a Japanese gang boss’ hostage situation of a sick baby creature with alternative consequences and a possibly worse outcome. It’s wrought with a fight against time, disbelief, a flagitious villain, with high-tech gadgetry, bullheadedness, prestidigation, and an old-fashioned will to save the world. And appropriately, it’s overlong, inventive, with impressive special effects, a solid production design, and agreeable exaggerated comic book performances. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki; with Ann Suzuki, Takashi Kaneshiro, and Goro Kishitani.
