As with previous Gore Verbinski efforts The Mexican and Mouse Hunt, the plot screws of the overlong Pirates of the Caribbean turn efficiently and mechanically.

Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Geoffrey Rush contribute standard characterisations from the template of raffish hero, feisty heroine and roguish pirate villain respectively.

What gives Pirates its spark is Johnny Depp’s completely surprising, swaggering and eccentric performance as the piratical Captain Jack Sparrow. Cannily likening pirates then to rock stars now, Depp modelled Sparrow on Rolling Stone Keith Richards. Unlike the other characters, he does not slot neatly into heroic or villainous mould.

Sometimes camp, sometimes sinister, mostly amusing and always intriguing, Depp is a blast of fresh air through what would otherwise have been a routinely spectacular, ultimately unsatisfying, blockbuster adventure.
