(Worth A Look)
(SCREENED AT THE 2003 MODS & ROCKERS FILM FESTIVAL.) Looking like a cross between an extended music video and the freakout scene from EASY RIDER, and wearing its '60s pedigree on its sleeve in every wigged-out frame, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT does not add up to anything much at all. It is not quite a documentary--the term implies a certain degree of intellectual coherency, which is not present here in the slightest--and yet it's not quite anything else. Still, I liked it, whatever it is.Very rarely seen nowadays in any form, this is essentially a free-form piece made up of randomly assembled, briskly edited, fast-paced vignettes of hippie types frolicking on the beach, in the grass, etc. A cool '60ish soundtrack plays continuously; it includes a bizarre song about the Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls, which is a very real place briefly featured in the film. And yes, Tiny Tim himself shows up to perform "I Got You Babe" with a female singer, in a concert sequence that--this is somebody's idea of humor, I guess--is intercut with shots of go-go chicks screaming at a Beatles show.Candy for the eyes and ears, if not the mind. Best viewed while under the influence of mind-altering substances.
