Dawn! is a tedious biopic of champion swimmer Dawn Fraser. The casting of non-professional Bronwyn Mackay-Payne in the lead role proves fatal to the movie’s credibility. It makes sense to cast a non-acting swimmer only if the sporting achievements are the focus of the film. But the script, by producer Joy Cavill, spends more time out of the pool than in it, exploring the failed relationships and constant scandals surrounding Fraser. Except when she’s swimming, Mackay-Payne moves and recites her lines awkwardly.Even with a remarkable actor in the lead, the routine script and ordinary direction of Ken Hannam suggests Dawn! could only have ever been another conventional sporting biopic. Still, Fraser’s involvement - she provided “technical advice and assistance” - suggests this project must have seemed more promising in conception than execution.
